Los Angeles Laker's Kobe Bryant, left, practices with Scottie Pippen, during a team basketball camp in Honolulu, Hawaii, Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005.

Los Angeles Laker's Scottie Pippen, speaks to the media, after a team practice session in Honolulu, Hawaii, Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005.

Does this mean he has to carry Kobe's bags and do his laundry too since he's been his so long?

Anyone else think it could be beneficial having an assistant coach who could in all reality practice with the team?

    Jackson, Bryant speak on phone

By Ross Siler , Staff Writer

On the morning of Phil Jackson's return as Lakers coach, Kobe Bryant placed a call Tuesday to offer congratulations, then issued a statement through his agent saying, in part: "In Phil Jackson, they chose a proven winner. That is something I support.'
What Bryant didn't do, however, was agree to a sit-down meeting with Jackson in recent weeks. And Bryant also didn't make an appearance at the Staples Center news conference to announce the hiring, though he was not asked by the Lakers to do so.

That left Bryant's support for Jackson's return still uncertain. It was only nine months ago that Jackson's controversial diary of the Lakers' 2003-04 season was published, portraying Bryant as insubordinate and uncoachable over the course of nearly 300 pages.

"I would love everybody to get along and be great friends,' Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. "But primarily, that's not what this is about. This is about a team forging ahead, getting better and winning basketball games.'

Bryant believed he was in a no- win situation as negotiations between Jackson and the Lakers progressed, feeling as if he would be blamed if he met with Jackson and his former coach did not take the job.

One Lakers source said Tuesday he believed that Bryant's reputation would be burnished merely by the hiring of Jackson with little public input coming from the superstar guard.

Jackson, meanwhile, said he thought his relationship with Bryant could be rebuilt.

"I really encouraged him to find a way to get his zest back for the game,' Jackson said of his phone conversation with Bryant, adding, "He wants to come back and make some people eat some words.'

In his book, Jackson not only described a "psychological war' fought with Bryant since training camp, but wrote of storming into Kupchak's office, launching into a tirade and demanding Bryant be traded.

Among many criticisms, Jackson's blasted Bryant for wanting a "higher-status' airplane to take him to his Colorado court appearances and wrote that "the defining characteristic of Kobe's childhood was his anger.'

On Tuesday, Jackson spoke of rebuilding the trust between himself and Bryant, and of keeping the locker room a more private place than what was the case on past teams.

Bryant also will have to contend with a return to the triangle offense, likely in a more elaborate form than the rudimentary version with which the Lakers finished the season under interim coach Frank Hamblen.

"It'll be a different type of a game,' Jackson said, pointing out the absence of Shaquille O'Neal at center, "that's played inside of a system that's very similar.'

Jackson said he would contact former Chicago Bulls forward Scottie Pippen about joining his staff as an assistant. Ross Siler can be reached at (818) 713-3607.

I couldn't find anything stating that he had officially joined the staff...but I think the picture probably answers that question.

This is actually true, he was brought on to help Lamar Odom (like Kareem was brought on to help Bynum/Kwame).

Remember when Kobe and Scottie were going to fight b/c Scottie Pippen wraped Kobe up to intentionally foul at the end of the game even though the Blazers (Scotties team at the time) were pretty much out of it?

It's all about teaching the triangle to the new guys, plus helping out Odom. I think it's good for the young guys. The Lakers have great coaching at camp this year. Hopefully that translates to wins this season. Oh, and another thing...Kobe's slimmed down from 230 to 214 this year. His sprint stats were as fast anyone the Lakers worked out. He even matched quickness and sprint stats of Ray Felton, who they worked out pre-draft. I guess they want Kobe guarding the point while A Mckie and odom tangle with the 2's and 3's.

Do you think Scottie will go sulk on the bench if Phil doesn't ask for his input during the timeout in the last 2 seconds of the game?

Pippen has put his time in, working for “B” teams like the Bulls & Trailblazers...Although it is awkward to see him wear “the purple & gold”...I am happy to see him live his dreams...

He may only be the towel boy...But he is working in the Sistine Chapel of Basketball...Along side the memories of Wilt, Kareem, Jerry, Magic, Chickie, Worthy, Jeanie....The list is endless....

They could have used Pippen a while back to teach either Shaq or Kobe how to be a proper second banana. Frankly I don't think that he's going to be able to help Odom too much. I used to really like him but I think if he was going to blossom into the great things that were expected of him that window has come and gone.

Funny reference, Sportcamper. The Sistine Chapel, a chapel in the Palace of the Vatican, housing the likes of a Zen Budhist meditator (Phil) and a Muslim assistant (Kareem).

You've always had a good sense of humor, though.
