It's hockey. Who gives a ?
But yeah...really weird format. It's like they didn't have enough teams.
Not that I'll be watching but can anyone explain to me why there are individual countries and continents (Europe, North America), including continents that overlap those very countries in the pools? That makes no sense to me.

Not enough teams.
They also wanted to make sure they have the best players on ice. The countries with enough players to compete formed their own team. The countries with Elite players but dont have enough player at en elite level formed team Europe.
Team North America is an under 23 team. Most composed of Canadian and America players. Many of which are really good players in the NHL. The NHL wants to make sure the most talented players play. Increase the compe ve level.
But yeah..its not much of a world cup. ICE hockey isn't exactly that popular of sport. Only maybe 1 country has it as their number one sport....maybe Finland too.
Russia is soccer and Hockey..
Seems dumb. Even if Iceland and Greenland would field a team that outright sucks, at least it's a unique team and there's no shame in losing. Or they could have split it up into provinces, states and territories. Ontario and Quebec could still dominate, as could Minnesota, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey.
The hockey thread is in the sports forum. You should lump hockey with the soccer thread because nobody likes either one of them .
