good luck with that! not worth it at all no matter how you spin it.
Well, I dropped my laptop because of my butter-fingers... There is a few cracks diagonally across the screen and I need to replace it. Looks like
a like a "piece of cake" to replace but I was wondering...
It's a 1080P 17.3", and anyone know how if a 1440P or 4K screen can be simply put in?
My understanding is I just need the right size screen and matching connectors, but this seems too easy. I assume the electronics in the screen are like that of a monito, so the graphics card adjusts. But I don't like assuming.
Anyone know?

btw, you need the right kind of controller too. without that, you will never get another screen working. btw, controller cards are a bit expensive and laptop screens are, my guess, more expensive than buying a whole new laptop. it's like printers, when the ink runs out just buy a new printer. lol
If the manufacturer happened to make different models with higher res screens, you might be in luck.
Check http://lcds4less.com/ (I have no affiliation with that site) for you laptop model and see what they have. Unfortunately video connectors for laptops are not necessarily standard, AFAIK.
I gave up on checking. MSI tech support was no help because they will not address changing the spec.
I opened it up since I was too uncertain of the listings online. The screen is the Innolux N173HGE-E11 REV.C1
I ordered it today:

I was going to pay a computer place to change it, but of the two places I deal with, one doesn't do this work, and the other wanted $175 for labor. It's so simple, I will do it myself.
I will still keep an eye out for a 1440P or 4K replacement. According to those I talked to, all I need is the matching connector. That the controller is part of the screen. Like changing monitors on a desktop.
I hope that's true!
The laptop cost me $1050. I added $90 for max memory, and another $320 for a 1 TB SSD.
It's worth keeping.
The screen is $69.47. Full HD, 17.25" 127 dpi. I found the specs. Uses up to 8.3 watts.
Just looking at the specs again. It uses an I-PEX interface. That should be what determines if another resolution is interchangeable.
Time for some more searches!
LOL...
The I-PEX is the connector only.
Looking around, what I see is the pin descriptions for the 30 pin I-PEX are similar to HDMI.
For the moment, I will consider screen resolutions to be interchangeable.
You must be buying the cheapest crap you can find.
Printers similar to the one I bought can now be purchased for ~250. I think I payed ~ $350 for it. Is that cheaper than the ink?
It is a multi function, two tray, with 11 x 17 tray and scan-bed. Auto-feed.
If interested, the 30 pin cable is "embedded display port."

I see no reason why I can't upgrade the screen if I find the right one to fit.
El-Nono...
What do you think?
So far I have determined my screen using the 30 pin connector is a 2 lane eDP. The only 4k replacements I have found use the 40 pin 4 lane.
That's cool. eDP is pretty recent. Good to know they're standarizing, because LVDS was all over the place.
Yep.
Looks like I'm out of luck putting a 1440P or 2160P in it.
Oh well...
That 1080P w/GTX950M and i7-4720HQ is sweet. Still, I want a better resolution yet. I guess next time I buy a laptop.
I was checking 1060 and 1070 performances today. I have the GTX950 in my tower. Thinking of upgrading. My three 1440P monitors do stress the 950 sometimes.
Thinking of this:

I'm disappointed by this thread, tbh...
New screen in and working about 45 minutes ago. Took less that 1/2 hr. 22 small screws...
Works like new!
To have to say stuff like that, you must have very low esteem... having to denigrate others, to elevate yourself...
Can't you ever be constructive?
Can you install six screens on a laptop?
