I know there is a stigma on this site against PTR, but this is a nice article talking about what the Spurs are doing right to win all these games.

    http://www.poundingtherock.com/2017/...good-this-year

Why the Spurs are so good this season

It comes down to three-pointers, free-throws and dunks, who knew?

    by Michael Erler

This may seem ironic, considering the Spurs’ tough loss at Atlanta, but I feel more optimistic about them than I have all season. About ten different things had to happen for them to lose to the Hawks on New Year’s Day. They ran into a superhuman performance by Paul Millsap, and a career night from Tim Hardaway Jr. Kawhi Leonard was a s of himself, still weak from a bout with a stomach bug. They got virtually nothing from Jonathon Simmons, Kyle Anderson and Dewayne Dedmon. An Atlanta squad who usually shoots threes very poorly (33.1 percent) just happened to make 14-of-28 of them against the Spurs. These things happen, and hopefully you don’t run into them in a playoff game.

What is encouraging is not only the Spurs’ glossy 28-7 record but more so that the eye test and the numbers are starting to align with the standings, when that wasn’t the case earlier in the season, when the team was winning some coin-flip games more because of Leonard and the bench than anything else. LaMarcus Aldridge, Pau Gasol, Tony Parker, Danny Green and Manu Ginobili are all playing their best ball of the season these past two weeks and gradually the team’s scoring differential is growing.

So, the question before us: Why are the 2016-17 Spurs so good?

Stigma is because PTR is far better a site in general right now.

Thanks a million, BillMc, (or possibly 4/$60MM). The posted PTR article provides excellent team statistics, and the imbedded Aussie article offers excellent analysis of Patty Mills, reinforcing my personal conviction that the Spurs will retain Patty: https://pickandroll.com.au/aussies-n...portsman-2017/

The defense so far has been encouraging. The numbers are good and support the idea that our D we would fair well against the GSW. It still feels like we would give up to many shots at the rim and get out rebounded badly by Cleveland. Of course there is still the Clips or Rockets, but I think we are still improving. I'm looking forward to where will be at the end of the season and the playoffs.

Usually, you can tell how good the Spurs can be during and right after the RRT. (2014 you KNEW they were coming for it.) If this already gelling team hits another gear then. Watch out.

Still low 3's attempts and paint buckets but they really excel at other things.

Wasn't that the year that one of the other coaches complained because the Spurs' RRT gave them an advantage?

It's gonna be hard to improve on their road record during the RRT. But can you imagine the melt-downs if they go 4-4, after being almost unbeatable on the road?

4-4 for the RRT would be pretty bad.

    Opponents:
    Memphis
    Philadelphia
    Detroit
    NY Knicks
    Indiana
    Orlando
    LAC
    LAL

5 sub .500 teams and Indiana is barely above .500.

its due to lma and paus ability to hit the long jumper and three. its opening up all kinds of driving lanes for our guards and small fowards. if parker could hit the 3 like he has been doing, i smell another championship we are going to need pausey to keep hitting the 3 at the rate he has been hitting, and porker too, in order to pull away thristian thompson and demonkey jordan away from paint. then have the deadman tire them out when he comes in.
