He was considered top 3 when he retired, became #1 by getting another 3peat.

I remember him being pretty universally regarded as the GOAT after the 72-10 season and le.
Was cemented when he was winning after coming back from retirement for sure.
Crazy how half his rings and individual accomplishment was in his 30's
yeseterdays nba![]()
In 1993 when the Bulls beat the Suns. Threepeating back then was a big deal since it was something that hadn't been done since the Russell Celtics. The media anointed him the GOAT for that reason back then.
He has never been the actual GOAT. The NBA's marketing department memed him into a phony GOAT status because what else were they going to sell in the '90s? Boring-ass John Starks and Reggie Miller led teams (yesterday's NBA)? Karl "Pedo" Malone?
He was neck and neck with Magic in 93. His First 3 Peat separated him from other elite Superstars at the time (Magic, Bird and Dr. J) but his place was not consensus.
Goat talk was sealed in 96’ after he led Chicago to 72-10 and their 4th championship, at least with the media. Old timers in the barbershop who insisted Kareem and Russell’s ring count to diminish Jordan’s legacy were silenced after le # 5 and 6.
And yet the ring argument is used to diminish LeBron, Magic, Shaq etc 's achievements in order to protect Jordan's legacy
Cemented maybe, but I remember him being anointed by a lot of people after the first three-peat if not earlier, tbh.
FWIW I think Jabbar has a pretty good argument for GOAT, imo.
Take away rings and Jordan still has more regular season MVP's then those guys. A few years ago I actually thought Lebron was going to pass Jordan in MVPs but now it seems like at best he can only tie him and even that doesn't look like it will happen.
David Robinson got a regular season MVP in 95
Jordan has 5 and Robinson has 1. Enough said.
True, but Jordan is undefeated and is the lead dog in each championship run. Can't say the same for the rest.
If course he is undefeated
- Lakers were not even supposed to be in 91 Finals (neither were the Bulls, but Stern changed the rules for Mike) and they had a lot of injuries
- Drexler didn't have a Pippen
- Suns had perimeter D and no interior D
- Sonic were good but let's not forget MJ shot like in those series. Rodman was rhe real Finals MVP
- I'll give him 97
- the officiating in game 6 of the 98 Finals was comical
But yeal let's forget all his previous playoff failures
Jordan with a roster Bulls got swept in the 1st round, while LeBron took an even tier roster to the 2007 Finals
lefty, I see what you did there. lol
He torched the Suns from start to finish, he was basically Kyrie in Gm 5 mode the entire series.
Reminder that Kareem is the actual GOAT
But the East was much stronger back then compared to 2007. And the advanced metrics have Jordan a better player than Lebron overall. He has a better WS/48 minutes in the regular season and playoffs and has the best WS/48 minutes in playoffs history.
Jordan would have possibly had 4 straight championships if it wasn't for Pippen choking in Game 7 of the 1990 Finals. Jordan destroyed one of the best defenses in history the entire series, but Pippen had "migraines" and was horrible in Game 7.
He has a case
Idk in the 1st 3peat only Cavs and Knicks were good (the Pacers were coming but were not there yet).
Knicks should have won game 5 in 93 but you couldn't breathe on Jordan that night - although a case can be made for MJ not being 100% during games 1&2 because he stayed up late before games in Atlantic City
During the 2nd 3peat only the 98 Pacers were a real threat.
Miami was still despite having Zo an Tim, they had no bench.
The 97 Knicks had a legit shot at beating the Bulls but that brawl happened
Let's ignore the '96 Magic who won 60 games & had two superstars b/c they got swept by DK:('96 Magic = '14 OKC)

Kareem didn't win shyt w/ the Lakers until they lucked out & got Magic. Dude was KG in Minnesota status until that point.
The only time Kareem won a chip was when he had to All-Time top 10 players: Big O & Magic.![]()
Tbh they lost Grant to an injury in game 1 . He was very important for them.
DK choked big time the previous season and got killed on the other end by Penny![]()
