In his 249 minutes with no other true bigs on the floor, the Spurs outscored their opponents by 14.3 points per 100 possessions. In Gasol's 82 minutes with no other true bigs on the floor, they outscored their opponents by 18.0 points per 100 possessions.

How do they define a "true" big? Are Kyle and Davis bigs by their definition?

True big, as in non converted small forward (Bertans) or non combo forward (Anderson, Gay).

Posted this in another thread but I expect the frontcourt rotation to look like :



Gasol 26 MPG ( all at center)

Aldridge 32 MPG ( 10 at PF/ 22 at C)

Gay 28 MPG ( all at PF, final 7 minutes of each quarter)

Bertans 10 MPG ( all at PF, first 5 minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarter) I think the SL stays the same with Murray being subbed in for Parker, until Parker returns. Gasol plays the first five minutes of each half at center while LMA plays the first eight minutes of each half ( 5 minutes at PF and 3 at C). Aldridge then slides over to the five and plays the final 8 minutes of each half at Center.


I would like to see Aldridge roll to the basket more often, specifically when he is at the five with presumably Manu/Mills-Green-Leonard-Gay on the floor with him. The floor would be well spaced and Aldridge would provide vertical spacing and is an excellent finisher around the rim. In the Gasol lineup, I would like to see him spot up for corner 3's a bit more when Gasol is setting screens for Kawhi.

water is wet. The spurs knew this even midway last season but they couldnt justify making a drastic change in appraoch during a season.

They were built to play "big" and egos would get hurt. We can take our pick: LMA pouting, Gasol adjusting in his first season and already having agreed to play in the bench, Pop wasn't going to cut off his minutes, Bertans was a rookie and it would trample Lee's ego if all of a sudden he played more and leapfrogged veterans. On top of that Lee was playing well. Dedmon had a few games he played well too b4 flaming out. He was good defensively and Pop favors that above many other factors often. Finally, I am reluctant to mention him bc his thread had been on fire lately, but Pop not trusting Kyle, or it simply being easier to sacrifice him and his minutes than all the other big egos in the team etc.

Interesting article about the Spurs bench.

“The truth is, we have a great front office and they always figure out a way to bring in a lot of talent,” Ginobili said. “The kids are not maybe as well known or proven in this league, but (the front office guys) see things other teams don’t. We always ending up having a long team with a lot of players.”

The key for Paul to grab a rotation spot — besides finding his way on defense — will be understanding his role, Mills said.“It’s just that one particular thing,” Mills said. “We’re not expecting a Kawhi Leonard or a LaMarcus Aldridge in that second group. We all have different parts that make up the second unit.”

A lot of credit given to Manu and Mills for being the epicenter of the bench unit. Not much is said about Rudy Gay or others who may form a part of it. More than anything what stands out is this:

“We have a lot of a new guys,” Popovich said. “It will take a while to figure everything out.”Popovich could have said the same thing at this point in each of the past several seasons, and has.

One still expects the bench to be good. Their issues are probably their starting unit.
