I think the best way for Hamburger to deflect some the criticism about San Antonio 'stealing the Saints' is to issue a comment like the following...

"We in San Antonio sympathize with the plight of those in South Louisiana and South Mississippi as they struggle to recover from Katrina. We took in some of the survivors after the storm. We do not seek to cause New Orleans to lose its NFL franchise. We do feel that San Antonio is worthy of its own NFL franchise. The City of San Antonio wholeheartedly endorses Mayor Nagin's suggestion that the NFL award New Orleans another franchise..."

Sure, it's an empty political statement but I think that's the kind of tone Hamburger needs to adopt. He might be too close to Benson or too afraid to piss him off to do it, though.

I don't see the NFL allowing New Orleans to go without a team. In addition, I don't see the NFL blocking the relocation of the Saints to San Antonio.

San Antonio gets a NFL franchise. New Orleans retains a NFL franchise.

Win. Win.
