Rudy didn't sign up to be on a lottery team.
He could still help a real contender. If he wants out, all he has to do is ask.
Given how things are working out for the Spurs, I don't know if he can feel real confident about getting a long term deal with the Spurs this coming summer.

Rudy says he wants to be a Spur for life. He wants a multi year deal in the offseason.
Why would he? He's probably expecting a loyalty contract.
Rudy Gay curse strikes again..
He knows the Spurs are the only team that consistently hand out washed up players millions because of their culture at ude more than their impact on the floor. Rudy fell in line with the company mantra as soon as he got here.
He can still ball some, but he ain’t getting millions long term elsewhere.
This might be the statement bklynspursfan was talking about when he said players would have something to think about in free agency when they gave Pau Gasol the contract![]()

here's Rudy Gay after meeting with the front office to define his future
Rudy has signed up to be on a lottery team for most of his career. I don't think SA will be in the lottery, but if they are, it won't inconvenience him much.
why a buy out? trade him to get something back.
he's on a one year contract, so he would need to approve any trade.
Yeah really smart buy out your third best player on the roster, lol.
The tank would really be on, then.
Rudy ALWAYS signs up to be on a lotto team.
really? i didn't know that. even so, i do think he can add some value to a contender/fringe contender.
Rudy is actually playing really well this season. Sure, maybe not All-Star level...but solid, efficient basketball. He is shooting efficiently, defending well, and having a career year from three.
And we are still 10-11.
Obviously, Rudy is not the problem...but maybe the curse is really a thing.
Oh well, the Rockets are 9-11 after 20 games after losing 17 total games last season, so I guess it could be worse.
We can for sure get a first round pick for him from a pretender. Pull the trigger Drunkford. If you pull the gun trigger that's fine too.
I'm sure Gay doesn't want to be stuck on a lottery team either. One can only hope the Spurs trade him and get some value back while his stock is at the highest. Gay has no future on the Spurs. No one wants to see a 33yo Gay getting a 2-3 year contract from the Spurs this summer.
I am not optimistic at all though. Nothing in the Spurs's past indicates that they will trade Gay.
