    The Wall deals

    Spurs get: John Wall

Wizards get: Pau Gasol, Dejounte Murray and Lonnie Walker IV

Marc J. Spears: Who could revive Wall as one of the elite NBA point guards? How about Gregg Popovich, who coached Wall on Team USA?

The Spurs are a player away from being scary again, so imagine a lineup with Wall and fellow All-Stars DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge. Behind the Warriors, the West still looks wide open right now. Plus, a small-market San Antonio team would be locking in a star backcourt long term.

On top of moving on from Wall's contract, the Wizards would surround Bradley Beal with a point guard of the future in Murray (once he gets healthy) and another young talent in Walker, a 2018 first-round pick. Gasol would be included for financial reasons and to add some veteran leadership to Washington's locker room.

    The Spurs embrace the tank

Spurs get: Dennis Smith Jr., Wesley Matthews and a 2021 second-round pick

    Mavericks get: DeMar DeRozan

Andrew Han: Ever since the Spurs lost promising point guard Dejounte Murray in the preseason, they've been staving off their first lottery appearance since 1997. They're only three games apart in the loss column, but San Antonio and Dallas are trending in opposite directions. The Mavs are currently sixth in point differential (seventh in the standings), and the Spurs are 14th (10th in the standings). To jettison DeRozan and restart with Murray and dunking dynamo Dennis Smith Jr. would be the fifth stage of grief as San Antonio finally comes to terms with the end of its era of dominance.

Meanwhile, Dallas continues to make others look foolish for not swinging for Luka Doncic in the draft. The Slovenian product has harnessed the hype, and the Mavs are unexpectedly frisky for the playoffs. As a proven scorer, DeRozan can take some of the attention off the rookie and turn a "just happy to be here" playoff hopeful into a postseason rabble-rouser.

Both of these are terrible trades. Also why would the Mavs trade for DeRozan, he needs the ball in his hands, so does Luka.

Wall is not the player the Spurs need right now.

This team started the season with a great DeRozan-LMA two-man game which disappeared in last games. Is Wall the guy who could give LMA/our "shooters" good looks?

Also, Beal is a way better 3-point shooter than DeRozan. Wall-DeRozan duo seems awkward

This is a ing awful trade for the Spurs. Wall doesn't make us contenders and has an enormous contract. Why the would we give up our two most promising young prospects for him

Wall for 40 million a year? What a bargain ESPN! And what would it cost us, oh all of our best young players and a pick? Oh man that's a steal. Great article as always

yes espn would like the spurs to suck. we know this
Also, ESPN would want the Spurs to give all their good players to big market teams / teams they want to feature to get more TV / ad money

Spurs do enjoy trading for salary dumps so Wall might be enticing to the PATFO.

It’s Beal or bust to me, so extremely likely bust then. We need a guy who can create his own 3 to space the floor, play solid d on the perimeter and help us when we go on offensive droughts. Just a small trade like upgrade at sf, isn’t enough. Our offense with DeMar not shooting 3s looks like it’s in a phone booth sometimes

Yeah, neither trade actually improves the team (especially at SF) and creates a bigger logjam at the guard positions next season.

Just ESPN doing their usual terrible job of journalism....

Yes, Wall, great idea.... We certainly need to lock in the third higher salary in next year's NBA, who can't guard anybody. Mills is not enough a poor defender in the back court?

John Wall is the ultimate Fool's Gold.... flashy, big numbers, highlight reels.

Ultimately you get a guy about to be the highest paid player in the NBA who has mediocre efficiency, mediocre advanced stats, a history of fighting with teammates, long stretches where he just decides not to play defense, etc., etc.

The flashy big numbers were even only for one season (2016-17). Otherwise for the rest of his career he has been statistically a little above average. No thanks for Curry level money.
