NATO does want to encroach Russia in its border. But thats already a huge red line for Russia and they have said they will go to war if that happens. So the ball is on NATOs court. And as they just said they will not station troops in Ukraine, seems this issue is settled for now.
Sure there can be provocations from either side to ruin this temporary stalemate.
Even if somehow US is able to place nukes with a 5 minute Moscow flight time in Ukraine. Dont forget Russia has the hypersonic advantage that puts Washington DC in a similar 5 minute range of their Avangarde nuke.

Neither side has adequate missile defense technology. Flight times are pretty irrelevant other than as bragging rights. Once the first nuke lands its pretty much game over for everyone. We have the capability to destroy the world about 100X over.
