How about we just start one thread dedicated to arguing the merits of every single player to ever play for the spurs.
You do that and I'll be ready To BOOGIE!!
I'm sure some of you have argued this point to death, but I couldn't find anything on a search, so maybe we can rehash it. Assuming that Bruce stays the course in his career, retires a few years from now without winning DPOY, but with one or maybe two more rings, perhaps leading the league in 3pt % again...
Does anyone think that Bowen's jersey should be retired?
I think it should be, but we all know how loose I am with this after the Elliott and A.J. threads. That block on Chauncy's three in the ebbing moments of Game 7 sealed the deal for me...I've never ever ever seen a more amazing, unbelievable, clutch defensive play. I mean, that's not just some "Havlicek stole the ball! Havlicek stole the ball!!" kinda deal. Anyone can get a steal, especially on the inbounds. But it is incredibly difficult to block a shooter one-on-one when they're shooting a three, coming off of two staggered screens and still breaking down to protect the drive. Especially when the shooter is a hero in the clutch. That was a nail-in-the-coffin play if I've ever seen one.
Also, I think it would be a great statement of what's been most important to the Spurs success as a franchise...determination, tireless work ethic, and an undying commitment to playing smothering defense.
His stats obviously suck. He's finished second in DPOY voting twice. He led the league in 3pt % once. He has started over 280 consecutive games. Those are about the only tangible things you can point to. But everyone knows what his impact has been.

If AJ gets his number retired, it would be difficult not to retire Bruce Bowen's 12.
I'd support Bruce Bowen for jersey retirement if his career ended today...Bruce has gone above and beyond the call of duty and has done nothing but show total loyalty to this franchise...and he's also set the defensive tone for the teams last two les.
When Bruce originally signed here, he signed for, I believe around 900,000, turning down millions elsewhere...for the opportunity to start and be a part of this team.
In his last contract, he opted out so the team could renegotiate his deal(for less money annually), and sign Brent Barry...And that was so Brent could make substantially more than Bruce, to back him up...
That had to be a very difficult thing for Bruce to do...but it was something I believe everyone of his teamates noticed...I noticed it.
That's the kind of stuff that defines a player as true Spur...it's VERY uncommon for a player to do what Bruce did and not get a chip on his shoulder about it...that is a guy taking one for the team...and in todays era...when you get a player willing to take it in the wallet for the team...that's a special player.
Take those types of things into account, add in his extreme importance as defensive stopper in our last two les...
Bruce definitely gets my vote for jersey retirement. This guy is a true Spur.
I dont ever remember AJ giving any of his money to better the team, do you?
Then again AJ never really made that much...I guess that's what the rest of the league thought of his game.
Absolutely. The championship fortunes of the Spurs took an upward swing when Bruce came aboard. Everyone can recall how Kobe used to crucify the Spurs during the playoffs. Not that Bruce has completely shut him down over the years, but he has been instrumental in slowing him down, frustrating him and, at times, taking him "out of his game".
Furthermore, the list of scorers that he simply "shut down" during the 2005 playoffs is amazing. From Carmelo Anthony to Ray Allen to Shawn Marion to Richard Hamilton, Bruce lined 'em up and shut 'em out. One of the most amazing defensive efforts ever in the playoffs.
For the record, I agree with Conqueso. The block on Billiups was HUGE. Especially since Bruce volunteered to "switch up" on him because he knew Chauncey's rep for taking the last shot. It virtually sealed the game for us and it's a shame that not much pub was given to this play.
I believe Bruce should have his jersey retired. Does any one know where I can get Bruce Bowen jersey?
What's with all these number retiring debates?!?At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if we start advocating the Spurs retiring Troy Aikman's number.
The bar for getting your number in the rafters is going to get higher over the next 4 - 5 seasons as this team racks up a few more les...
that being said, I think Bruce deserves it.
Was he that guy that had to be on all of Rodman's teams? Or is he that big, goofy guy we drafted in Dave's 2nd season?
Bruce was more important to the last two les than AJ was to the first. If Bruce rides out the rest of his career here, maybe wins another le or two, especially if he retires and coaches here, I'd be all for it. If fan belovedness is what gets people's numbers retired (and that's the case with AJ, I believe) then I wholeheartedly support this, because frankly I've come to like Bruce alot more in the last four years than I cared about AJ while he was here.
Every player to ever play for the Spurs should have their numbers retired!![]()

Yes. For the same reason that AJ's number should be retired. Both players were key to a le run. In addition, both exemplify the teams they were on. Without them, the character of those teams would be entirely different and most likely the les would not have been won.Raise #12 to the rafters?
Bruce is the leader of this team. He's raised Manu's game. He hustles like no other and it's contagious. And he does it with less credit than anyone. Nuff said.
for sure, but you cant just use the "key player on le run" thing. I mean without Steve Kerr, without SJax, without Horry. You see what I'm getting at that way to broad.
Bruce should have his jersey retired and I dont want to repeat Sac so just read his post above if you need reasons.
He's definitely got my vote.
Yes, he deserves it!!Love ya Bruce.
