This is drive-by post, as I'm busy with fantasy football these days; but, food for fodder.

Is Manu now firmly cemented as the greatest 2nd round steal, ever?

John Starks was not even drafted, from streetball to the NBA.

Cuttino Mobley, Eric Snow, NVE, Cliff Robinson, Mark Price, Jeff Hornacek, Nate Mcmillan. Eventually he could be, but give him some time to acomplish more.

    Ginobili is better than Mobley.

If true, I apologize Guru, but I couldve sworn he was a second round pick.

Here's a nice list to choose from:

    Willis Reed - 2nd Rnd NYK 1964
    Paul Silas - 2nd Rnd STL 1964
    Van Arsdale - 2nd Rnd NYK 1965
Tom Van Arsdale - 2nd Rnd DET 1965
    Calvin Murphy - 2nd Rnd SD 1970
    Nate Archibald - 2nd Rnd CIN 1970
    Spencer Haywood - 2nd Rnd BUF 1971
    George McGinnis - 2nd Rnd PHI 1973
    Alex English - 2nd Rnd MIL 1976
    Dennis Johnson - 2nd Rnd SEA 1976
    Maurice Cheeks - 2nd Rnd PHI 1978
    Johnny Moore - 2nd Rnd SEA 1979
Glenn "Doc" Rivers 2nd Rnd ATL 1983
    Mark Price - 2nd Rnd DAL 1986

Nick Van Exel - 2nd Rnd LAL 1993

*** Dejan Bodiroga drafted in the 2nd Rnd by SAC in 1995 never came to fruition in the NBA...but what a player he is, never-the-less.

Doc Rivers was good? Nick Van Exel should do everybody a favor and sign with the Spurs for the min.

In the lottery era Spudd Webb was drafted in the 4th round Mario Elie in the 7th. Dennis Rodman?, 2nd round. Drazen Petrovic 3rd

Farther back Jerry Sloan was drafted in the 3rd round, Happy Hairston 4th. Our own Iceman was drafted by Phoenix in the 3rd round but of course never played for them. Mo Cheeks 2nd round.

Greatest 2nd round pick ever? Willis Reed 1964.

I left quite a few players off the list (list took a while) who are quite good, such as Jerome Kersey, Danny Ainge, Cliff Robinson along with some Spur favorites such as Malik Rose, Stephen Jackson and cult hero of the Forum - Edgar Helicopter Jones.

This topic is about 2nd Round picks but a little known fact...George Iceman Gervin was actually a 3rd Rnd Selection by Phoenix in 1974 and a year earlier, Larry Kenon was drafted by Detroit in the 3rd Rnd. They both went to the ABA first.

Where would this franchise be without Ginobili and Parker?

Ginobili is definitely one of the top former 2nd round (don't forget he was taken next to last in 1999) picks playing in the league today.

Its impossible to say where we would be, but if we didnt have young talent that was cheap, we love and believe it, it would be easier to attract young stud players to come here to play with Timmay.

Mark Price was a 2nd rounder? :shock

Wow! That guy had real game before his injury. Handle, passing, plus a wicked outside shot. Would have made a nice Spur in Dave's early days...

The highest profile signing the Spurs have made in free agency when the Spurs have had enough cap flexibility to offer a max contract has been 32 year old Brent Barry. Perhaps you can count Derek Anderson, who undoubted came to SA in part because of the cap room the Spurs would have in the following summer (though he might have wanted to go to Portland all along).

The Spurs took their shots at wooing free agents to San Antonio in 2001, 2003, and 2004. I think with the small market size, small town lifestyle, and rather large shadow of Duncan it is going to be hard for the Spurs to attract free agents of consequence. They have responded to this shrewdly by building the team through drafts and also by investing heavily in international scouting. Perhaps I am wrong but I think it is easier to convince non-American players to come to (and stay in) SA than Americans.

The Spurs have done what they can to ensure that Duncan would be surrounded by real talent through the prime of his career.

    WHOA THERE! Say WHAT???

John Starks played, albeit briefly, for one of the greatest college basketball programs ever, Oklahoma State. Streetball to the NBA my foot!

He wasn't drafted when he finished college, Pat Rilley got him a contract, out of streetball, or am I confusing with another Knicks mid-90s player?
