2032 unprotected pick swap from the Kings too. That's some faaaar sightedness.
All the guys they gotta cut to make the money work
We should be rolling by then….giving sac time to start sucking again! Lol
Just so you understand who he is, and who he isn't.
He's not the defender he once was. That comes with age. But he does know HOW to defend, which makes him useful to the youn guys.
He can't get to the rim like he used to. His % of shots near the basket has taken a dive, and even his close-midrange has gone down. He shoots 3's now.
His % of FG that are assisted has gone up to 96% - he doesn't create his own shot a lot anymore.
His FTA, even per 36 minutes, plummeted last season. That alone says he's nowhere nearly as dynamic as he once was.
He has always come up a bit light in the playoffs, compared to regular season.
Don't try to make him into something he's not, and you'll be a lot happier. He's here to help make young players better, not to lift the Spurs above the first or second round.
He's overpaid - except for a team that needs experience to help develop young players.
This won't be a season to contend, no matter how much you want it to be. This will be a season to teach Wemby how to "get over himself". Barnes and Paul have much more experience and knowledge than Wemby. I think he'll be fine putting his ego down and learning. I'm still not super-happy with tossing off that #8 pick, especially since adding another aging mentor on top of Barnes and Paul still doesn't make them contenders. I really would have liked to see them breaking in a core for the future. But you know wha to expect from this season. Relax.
Good stuff. I see this as an academy year. The young guys had so much trouble all learning at once. Having Paul and Barnes as structure is going to be a massive help.
I like it cause SF is a position of need and he’s so much better than Champanie. Cause he’s an Ironman and hasn’t missed a game in two years. And cause he’s another smart vet like Paul who can help all the young players not play so stupid at times.
Home run considering we are getting an unprotected 2032 pick swap out of it too!
‘’now we just need Mark and Lopez and we’ll be ready for training camp!
Well said.
I like this trade a lot. I also like that he has two more years on his contract. Might be exactly the time span he will be needed, considering Spurs might very well bring in another SF/PF next draft, who will learn from him. But the 2nd year also open different options regarding trades next year. Spurs might even be happy that the medium number on his contract likely fits package scenarios pretty well.
He is a high character guy, highly respected by teammates and around the league (four time finalist for the sportmanship award), he will play whatever role the Spurs need him to play.
and yes, he isn‘t the player he was some years ago. But he isn‘t washed up either. His numbers went down last season, but this also has something to do with the increased role of Murray and his low usage in the starting line up. (lowest of all starters)
btw. he had a career game this January, scoring 39 points in a wild game vs. the Warriors, Kings beating them 134-133 in their home. the man has something left in his tank.
He's now a limited player who can be a defender on weaker wings (can't handle stars, but that's a tough ask) and needs to fit into a team structure on offence. He's comfortably overpaid, but he's like an average / slightly below average NBA player now, which is a huge step up from a lot of the performance from the Spurs last year. Don't love the second year, but it's fine.
I think he's probably worth ~10m per year in performance, would have got a bit less than that in FA (e.g, I think Caleb Martin is similar (enough) as a player, got 4 years $32m). In a (likely) non contending year, is it worth taking on $16m in overpayment over two years for a unprotected swap in Wemby's prime from a team that's made the playoffs once in the last 18 years? I think so.
We weren't going to be contending this year, getting that unprotected swap for the type of player we'd have been targeting is sensible (though, less fun than a big splash).
Does this mean we're out of the Lauri Markennen bidding?
Shouldnt change a thing. Keldon or Collins would be going out in Markannen deal and that matches the salaries.
Thanks bro!![]()
Bump.
What a great pickup for the Spurs. The ultimate consummate, level-headed vet that every young team needs in the locker-room. Bonus point: Barnes is still relatively young (33 next month) and his contribution on court is starter-level for a borderline playoff team..

His contract is likely a plus now. Took a great pick from the kings to take him. Great deal.
As I said last summer, he'll be our next Finley.
No way he gets traded after waiving his trade kicker to play here, every team needs a reliable veteran like him.
Should be extended next year, he can be a useful bench piece for the foreseeable future.
Yep, nothing but good things to say about HB.
There are many guys on this team that are basically expendable...he is not one of them (unless it's absolutely required to bring in a star on the right deal)
I think it was an awesome trade, but make no mistake, if his ending contract is needed in a trade this summer, they’ll flip him without hesitation.
I get it...but again, has to be the right deal. He's exactly the kind of role player we need on the team, as opposed to some of these project players that never have (or never will) pan out. Problem is, most other teams probably see the same so their value isn't really high at the moment.
Great guys Harrison Barners and also really good player for the Spurs this season. I hope he's not traded and is here for some big playoff runs, but if needed in a trade to get a great return, they'd have to do it.
HB brings so much class to the team. He's also an interesting player in that, he rarely makes just one 3, he has many 3-4 3pt flurries which is not something everyone can do.
Truly a gift from the basketball gods and a shrewd move by the Spurs FO. I'm hoping that he can be a mentor to PF draft pick.
