Preach my friend, preach![]()
I have been on forums like since I would go on bbses in the late seventies on my 1200 baud modem.
Why is it that this forum disrespects the golden rule that has existed for forums since their inception: attack the message, not the messenger?
Is it just cause everyone on here is a crabby old boomer asshole?
Is it because everyone on here is just so angry and bitter cause the neighbor’s car s in your Gardenias? Is this your ‘Get off my lawn’ moment?
What happened to being civil with one another? Treating each other with kindness and respect?
I like the basketball analysis and content here but I feel like everyone is waiting to personally unleash a horde of on any poor soul who made the mistake of putting a thought out there.
Can’t we just stop the constant rude personal attacks a little? It would make it so much more pleasant to be here.
peace

I am fairly certain this is all the fault of Chinook![]()
Just kidding, he's good peeps and provides good, thoughtful insights.
This forum is great for basketball discussion once you learn to look past all of the trolling and not take things too seriously
It’s virtually unmoderated, and that attracts assholes.
I don't think there's anything wrong with going at people. Sometimes a person is just being an asshole, and nothing gets settled if you have to pretend otherwise. It's why discussions on RGM are never fully satisfying. Issue comes from people not understanding the difference between insulting someone and using an ad homenim fallacy.
a) Dismissing someone's argument because some characteristic about them (like the team they root for, "how much ball" you perceive them to watch, etc) is fallacious. Whether the claim about that person is true or not does not affect whether the argument that person is strong.
b) Calling someone an idiot, asshole or another as part of a larger response against their point is not an ad homenim fallacy. The ad homenim fallacy is concerned with credibility, not cordiality.
And while we're here:
c) Claiming a position of authority and attempting to use that position as an argument in and of itself is fallacious and condescending. It's literally building yourself up so you can talk down to the other person. Basically the argument of "I'm more credible about this topic, so I'm right" doesn't work. If you're more credible, you should be able to demonstrate credibility by citing sources or otherwise supporting your points with external factors.
d) Not respecting a person's claim to authority is not condescending. It's irreverent. It's often a bad character trait just like being condescending is, but it's not the same thing. It's also not fallacious. Asking for evidence from someone who believes they are above proving their point is just good form. Of course that doesn't mean every opinion is equally valid, and not understanding when someone is legitimately an authority on a topic makes you an out-of-touch asshole.
I love SpursTalk because you don't have to engage with more contentious aspects of discourse if you don't want to. The ignore list exists for a reason, and liberal use of it can dramatically improve the experience, especially if you're not one of the people who has "an admirer" who'll annoy you by quoting you endlessly despite you never replying. But it feels good to be able to take off the gloves and go at it. This place isn't 4Chan. Tons of legit discussion happens, and for the most part people's darker aspects are not on display. When it happens, people tend to hyperfocus on it. But even in the Olympic thread, there's nothing that crosses the line of decency despite the blood shed over the past few days.
yo feelings clown
It’s locker room talk and take it as that. I read insightful posters and equally ignore a lot. But it’s a great forum to follow my Spurs.
Try the soccer sub-forum, snowflake
This place used to be much, much worse.
Agreed. This is probably the least toxic I’ve seen this forum since I’ve been around. Not saying it isn’t obnoxious at times, but it has definitely improved for some reason
Because most would never have the audacity to so do in "real life", but feel they get a reprieve almost playing a character of sorts, in anonymity behind the comfort of a screen.
I mean we used to have legit cyber bullying several years back with Koolaid Man, Avante, and Derp.
Spurstalk is not for the weak man. And I like that part of it tbh. I can talk bball, be told I’m wrong, proven im wrong and get on. Or be told I’m wrong, proven right and I get to talk. It’s like compe ive talking banter
The most annoying part about the attacks is when good threads are ruined because of such attacks. I just roll my eyes and say well so much for that thread.
it’s childish but since the moderation is extremely lax, it will keep happening
Well I guess this shoe fit when I joined 15 years ago but now I don’t know WTF this person is actually talking about?!?
Some things on the Internet need moderating but a Spurs message board is not really high on that list. Yes, some people had to get it out of their system at first, then realized it’s not that interesting to post the F word just because you can.
ST is so much more tame overall than it was a decade ago
Two sides of coin on this board. Someone goes in on you then you can do the same to them.
It's the last vestige of true uncensored message board you can find outside of surlyhorns. Enjoy it
the kevin tran trolling is unacceptable....... kht is the best poster on this site but trolls keep attacking him............
You should put on your big man diapers and head to Reddit.
Spurstalk is like battle rapping, getting your message across while ting on your counterpart in the wittiest, douchiest way possible. It is 70% of the fun, tbh.
I remember T Park back in 2005 got it bad when he quit on the team after Game 4. He was bullied for many many years
The secret to handling bullies and assholes is... being dead inside, like I am.
They can't hurt what ain't there. Got em!
who? oh you mean T Pork
This is a love fest compared to the way it was when the Spurs had the big three. Except for the occasional left right political crap it is middle school.
most of that had to do with him being a massive asshole
Surprised no one has dropped the classic op is a got line
