Atleast it’s a good draft year.
Atleast it’s a good draft year.
I think its clear that this loss in on Wemby rustiness...whenever he was on court he was always involved and touching the ball more than necessary, but probably thats' the plan till he regains his shape and get comfortable with the new team rules, new teammates and the fact that opposing teams now know a lot better who he is and how he plays and are trying studied tactics to let him be uncomfortable...all our offensive game was thruough him and he obviously (and logically ) wasn't ready to bear all this from the first game of the season.
That said, I'm skeptical neither that we're gonna push Wemby to accelerate his development in a nuclear weapon he's supposedly gonna become, nor that in any case we'll do much more than look for just a decent record against teams in a western conference that's as strong as ever...and probably that's all by design...
I know he and the club said this season is on the wiew of winning games, but the same thinghs were said last season and, as the draft choices we made (you never sell a top 10 pick for later picks 6/7 years from now if you want to win immediately or as soon as possible) has made clear, its actually not in the best interest of the team to use all energies for the winning goal at all costs. So this one will probably be another season where outcome doesn't count too much simply because we're not "enough" to be a contender...and we're looking to add more quality pieces considering that we're gonna have for sure 2 first round draft picks (and possibly four), in a loaded draft.
I've been resisting for years to be a Pop hater (athough not in the sniffer camp).
It feels like this is the season I run out of excuses...
Using the first games of the season as pre season games warm up is a nice addition to Pop's legendary coaching tbh.
If Vassell doesn't have an Allstar season, Wemby is going to get bullied all season long, opp teams have NO ONE else to respect in the spurs's roster.
^ yup, back to blaming teammates. Never change.
Face it, wemby had a bad game, it’s no big deal. It has nothing to do with his teammates, he jacked up ill advised shot. He turned the ball over. His teammates played decent ball.
An overall lack of talent isn't correctable tbhTheir offense sputtered at times but most of the problems looked correctable.
wtf are you talking about
Go read my other posts I've been on Vic all day...
And this post was at no point a criticism of Devin but of the FO

I'm withholding much judgment til DV returns. Without his scoring, we're not going to keep up with the vast majority of NBA teams.
That said, CP3 looks done. It's the first game and he already looks tired. I don't think there's anything left there for a concerted effort. Would love to be wrong.
Barnes looked good. So did Champ. Castle did well for Game 1 of his NBA career, but he's not going to change the face of the team any time soon.
Zollins was remarkably disciplined in not jacking up a dozen shots.
Otherwise, the team didn't look good. 23-24 all over again. Hopefully, Vassell makes a bigger impact than I'm expecting.
I am worried how easily Wemby chucked 8 threes.
His teammates being bad and him playing bad can both be true.
Spurs were compe ive for 3 quarters, and then the stars took over. Spurs have 1, and he didn't show up.
I didn't like the preordained messages coming from the Spurs that wemby would start the season rusty and playing bad. In the end, Spurs aren't competing right now and maybe that's they're bottom line. They don't care how bad of a product they push as long as they keep wemby healthy, everything else doesn't matter.
Wemby definitely needs to mature with his shot selection and decision making but he's still a kid with the whole defense focused on him at all times. It'll slow down. He'll be fine.
Not enjoying the reserved role for stephon castle. He clearly needs to be on the court more. I wanted him to play second unit to get the ball more. In the 4th, that unit kept looking him off. Wesley and branham both playing for the same spot as him isn't healthy for his development. Yes, he can't shoot, but neither can the rest of the team.
Still, 3 quarters of compe iveness besides wemby doing everything he can to throw the game away was a good sign for the team improving.
Wemby will play better. Castle will eventually get more lead minutes. Vassell helps the starters quite a bit and champ will mesh well with castles game when the lineup set.
Yeah CP3 to me looks like 3 of the 4 wheels have fallen off and the last wheel is all rim and scraping the road. He can’t get by anyone he can barely get any separation when using a screen. Still a valuable addition for what he can teach the young guys especially Castle but yeah he looks done.
I think CP3 was fine. I don't expect him to beat many on the switch. He had some scrappy plays and got some good looks for our non shooters.
Mavs packed that paint. I am stunned Sochan got that many points because it felt like he rarely had room under the basket. Same as Wemby obviously.
Wemby didn't have the energy and just was loose with the ball.
I was most disappointed with our rebounding. Mavs have hard working bigs and other than Sochan, Spurs don't have those scrappers.
Dallas is the reining Western Conference champions and the only change to their lineup is they added a three time champion Klay Thompson. Does anyone remember this?
The Spurs decided to let Wemby rest after a busy summer and are using the early season to build chemistry. Chris Paul is nearly forty. The most important outside scorer was hurt.
It's not a surprise the Mavs, at home, on opening night, after a Finals run, with the league scoring champion and MVP candidate won.
To me, I see that Sochan, Barnes, and Julian had great games. JC especially. Has he turned the corner into a pretty great role player? And CP looked fine for what he'll eventuality do here.
So maybe we can pick a lane. Around here it's people getting upset we won't get a good draft pick and then the next moment getting upset we're not doing everything to win games. Pick a lane.
Or don't. But it's a little wild to not recognize the Mavs were one of the top two or three teams in the league last year.
Hopefully 10 games in they will get it going...Impressed with Champ and Banes...without them 2 we would have been runned out of the the AA Center....BAD Also WTF is up with Luka MFer Always crying to the refs...he like effn Aarron Rodgers dude shut up and play your en game!!
I believe you let castle take his lumps now but learn / gel with the team ; he is your pg. Let him play big minutes and work through the mistakes. He appears to be a fast learner!
One of the few bright spots this early in what probably is another 30 win season is that Champ seems legit.
"Another 30 win season" after two seasons with 22 wins? You're being quite optimistic there ...![]()
One game and it’s doom and gloom. This place never changes.
Game? This ing place lives and dies with every POSSESSION.
Mavs are the better team and Wemby had a really bad game. It's a logical and deserved loss.
Something noteworthy after the preseason and this first game is Champagnie's level. "3 and D" players are highly valued in today's NBA. If Champagnie confirmed to be a decent/good one, Spurs will have one of the best non-rookie contract in this league with Champagnie being locked at $3M per year for the next 3 years.
Trivia: the NBA really wanted Mac McClung in the dunk contest in 2023, but they didn’t want the winner to be a gleaguer. They asked around, and Philly Agreed to sign him, waiving Julian in the process. Earlier that season, Philly had waived Bassey, so for the prices of…nothing, we got a starter and a rotation big.
While Awful Coaching gives us Pop bad grades for horrible defense

I actually don't see the point of Tre in the rotation when everyone is healthy.
We don't need any of that two point guards on the floor nonsense if Tre isn't actually taking and making 3pt shots. Last night he took 0 in 15 minutes.
Castle is already showing he'll be a point guard, will probably be better than Tre within a few months.
Mamu has had a great pre-season and deserves minutes.
Collins has been as useless as ever, Bassey can't be worse than him on defense.
Castle/Champagnie/Keldon/Mamu/Bassey looks like a way better bench to me than whatever we had out there last night.
Starting lineup would've been fine if Wemby had a good game, can't expect them to do more when he's turning it over so much and not making any shots.
We already knew CP3 was done. Don't know why anyone is shocked by that. He can certainly buy us enough time to at least look like a basketball team. Even with him cooked we shouldn't see other players bringing the ball up the court when he's in the game. That alone needs stop and would help.
Yes we lost to Dallas but I expected that. I'm a realist, we are overall a better team than last year. The addition of Barnes, Paul, and Castle will help us in the long run although Paul seems to be running on fumes. More players are playing where they should be, like Branham and Wesley in garbage time rather than starting or extended minutes on the second team. Wemby looks tired but probably just needs to adjust back to the NBA style of play rather than the somewhat slower Olympic style. At least no one took a step backwards - with Paul its just old age. Once we play a team closer to our level and not last years conference champs who also improved a bit, it will become more obvious, the improvements from last season.
