Putting the Laugh in McLaughlin.
Poor man's Tre Jones?
Saw a MIN fan come to the Spurs subreddit this morning and give a scouting report on JMac. I'll quote it below. Basically sounds like Tre Jones who can shoot to me. Don't know what the Spurs plans are with him, but it did seem from the video yesterday that they were quite welcoming of him, not like he's just some guy they're going to waive.
First off, congratulations on acquiring Fox, but for those who don't know anything about Jordan McLaughlin, don't sleep on him.I'm not going to convince you that he should be in the starting lineup, but I can say that he is a valuable asset coming off the bench.
Jordan McLaughlin has a high basketball IQ, rarely turns the ball over and is able to defend on the perimeter. Inside the lane, he uses his small stature and quick acceleration to split defender and drive to the basket, and if he runs into trouble, is excellent at finding the open man. On defense, he uses his small size to his advantage by picking the pockets of big men under the basket.
McLaughlin is also a reliable 3 point shooter, and hit some clutch shots last season with the Wolves. He hustles by diving for loose balls, getting back on defense and is good in transition.
De'Aaron Fox is undoubtedly the highlight of the trade, but I hope you welcome J Mac with open arms and appreciate the value he brings to the team, whether he plays 12 minutes or 2 minutes.
Respectfully, a Timberwolves fan.
Edit: grammar
please do not let this throw-in turn out to be a sleeper with upside. I cant stand more genius in this trade
Poor man’s Derrick White basically equals Tre Jones right?
Thanks for the scouting report, I'd assumed he was gonna be an auto-waive given he's 28, on a minimum deal and the 5th PG.
Barring injury, I don't see how he gets any real PT (even garbage time) with Fox/Paul/Castle/Blake, but over the past 2 years he's taken 60.8% of his shots from 3 and hit at 45.2%. Obvi small sample, but 37% for his career, he's prolly a top 5 shooter on this team.
Sounds ready to assume the DeVonte Graham role of being one of our best shooters and never seeing the court
This guy is 6 foot?
Isn't the roster already vertically challenged already?
more like Tre Jones with a 3-point shot for 1/3 of the money
I havent watched him play for a while but I remember him playing really well in a playoff series, can shoot, solid playermaker, solid defensively
Keep for now especially if fox can't finish the season.
CP3
Fox
Castle
McLaughlin
Wesley
Lots of point guards.
he even talks like Derrick White
Tre with a 3pt shot and hops, tbh.
wolves fans really seemed to like him. not surprising he was buried in sacto with each of Fox/Monk/Ellis handling PG duties.
not sure where he's going to find minutes here behind Fox and Paul. i would like to see him get a shot to showcase a bit. if Paul leaves in the offseason or retires, we could be looking at a nice cheap backup PG since Tre is gone

I could see him getting a good bit of PT alongside Castle in the 2nd unit if we trade Paul or buy him out. He's 38% from 3...that's not bad..
I don’t know a ton about him, but what little I’ve seen, he’s good in his respective role. And if CP3 goes, he might absorb his minutes. I was excited to see he was included.
They'd probably have a big fill the rotation spot or use it situationally between a big, Wesley and Branham, instead.
guy looked totally invisible out there
