There was an article a while ago looking at predictors for NBA success and having a dad who played in the NBA was either one of the biggest or the biggest predictor for draft prospects. I'll try and find it.
Check out Dylan’s lifestyle before he’s even drafted:
Dylan Harper might be one of the rarest prospects we’ve seen. Not just because of his talent, but because he’s already rich. He grew up with money, access, and stability. No pressure to make it for a paycheck. That alone puts him in a totally different category than most guys entering the draft.
Most players are trying to secure their future. They come from tough situations, and basketball is their way out. That kind of hunger is what drives them, at least early on. But once they get paid, it changes. They’ll still talk about wanting to be great, but a lot of times it doesn’t feel real.
Look at Dejounte Murray. Came from a rough background, made it to the league, got his bag. And to his credit, he worked for it. But when he talks about greatness now, it’s hard to take seriously. He’s constantly flaunting his lifestyle, flexing cars and jewelry. And he’s not alone. There’s a whole group of players like that who peak early, cash in, and then kind of coast.
That’s what makes Dylan interesting. He doesn’t need the money. He’s not doing this for survival. If he’s here purely to compete and win, that’s rare. Only a couple guys like that have come in and actually backed it up. Steph and Klay are the best examples. Both came from NBA families, grew up with money, and still became elite. They weren’t trying to make it. They were trying to leave a legacy.
If Dylan’s wired like them, he could be a real problem. Guys like that don’t show up often.
The counterpoint:

Induct Bronny in the HOF right now tbh
This is the Devinition of Vassell. Dude wears all that bling and mails it in on the court.

Nothing was more cringe when Ben Simmons would sit out ‘injured’ for 30 games in Philly but would rock up on the bench wearing 40 different shades of bright coloured clothing and 3 pounds of jewellery. What an absolute clown.
Great insight and thanks for posting.
Let the class warfare begin!
It would be interesting to learn more about the pre-NBA years for some of these kids and their families. Dylan maybe rich or just a burbs kid. It could also be a case of "investing" upfront and letting that first NBA contract pays for all the nice stuff. It's a whole industry i bet, and we dont even know the half of it.
I remember years ago reading an interview with Carlos Boozer where he talked about his dad, who was an NBA player, forcing him to practice with his right hand behind his back and telling him to eat his cereal with his left hand, all in an effort to make him more ambidextrous for basketball. That's certainly something my dad wasn't telling me to do at age 8.
Brian Wright gonna start doing credit checks on draft prospects now thanks to Dejounte.
Wright was way ahead of the curve on drafting "Cosby kids", so to speak. (Middle class two parent home life, generally speaking).
I think this economic interpretation doesn't hold as well for European players, who often come from poorer white Eastern European war-torn back grounds, or black European players from a hard-lived immigrant experience. But happy to be wrong.
Rashad McCants is easily the dumbest person in sports podcasts
Interesting too how the Cosby and Primo narratives have evolved.
Build too big of a facade it will eventually crash down upon you?
