Free agent guard Lindy Waters III has agreed to a one-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs, agents Shy Saee and Winston Nelson of Klutch Sports tell ESPN. Waters has shot 37% from 3 in his first four NBA seasons in Oklahoma City, Golden State and Detroit.

Not a fan of this signing. Mediocre defender, mediocre 3P shooter, poor scorer in terms of efficiency. He was okay with the Warriors but a disaster with the Pistons (albeit in limited minutes). Only thing going for him is low turnover rate and to some extent, an above-average steal rate. I guess there were slim pickings and thats why he was signed. But he has got a lot to prove if he has to stick to the team.

Meh. End of the bench spot so not really a big deal but probably would’ve just rather let DJG get a shot.

Have to imagine the last main spot goes to a big.

At least he won't demand any minutes. He's unlikely to get many other than in blowouts or veteran rest nights

Hey, it looks like he brings "Championship Experience" as he won the 2024 G-League championship

I think the Spurs are at 17 of 21 camp spots

    Fox, Harper, McLaughlin
    Vassell, Champangie, Waters, Jones-Garcia
    Castle, Johnson, Bryant
    Barnes, Sochan, Minix, Ingram
    Wembanyama, Kornet, Olynyk

Two or three of those spots are probably going to be used to get assignees to the Toros. I'm a big fan of having guys compete in camp, but they don't really have the salary space to eat guaranteed money. The closest we might get is if Minix and Ingram get X-10 deals and compete for the final regular rotation spot. If that gets the Spurs a final two-way spot, I'd still like it to go to a center. Maybe they could sign a couple of summer-league bigs to X-10 deals and let the winner get the two-way and the loser go to the Toros.

They only had five on the regular rotation, so they actually did have room.

Have the Spurs been bad for so long that folks don't remember what a deep bench is? Folks have been talking about the last few signings like they don't.

Very Spurs-like move. 6'6" 3&D prototype, 6'10" wingspan, Native-American and a rights activist, former DoorDash driver who once dropped 34 for the Dubs.
He should help make training camp, and the season, more compe ive for Castle, Champagne, Harper and Vassell. Fells like a Pop kind of move.Gotta be a dog to get where he has gotten.

    I don't hate it.

Yeah, I agree - was thinking they would go taller and a better 3p% like Coffey. End of bench guy, he'll work.

Here is another write-up on Waters that goes with what you stated -

Lindy Waters is known for his compe ive and disruptive defense, particularly as a wing player, with a reported 6-foot-10 wingspan. While not an "all-world" defender, he competes well and doesn't hurt his team on that end of the floor. He's been described as a solid defensive player with the agility of a guard and the length of a wing, getting into passing lanes and disrupting plays according to Golden State Of Mind. His defensive rating has varied slightly year-to-year, but he's known for his hustle and ability to make an impact on that end of the court

Watched him a lot in Okc. He is one of the great Okc developmental stories like Dort who came from
nothing. You will like him. Has a great at ude, can shoot and will be a fan favorite. A real hustle guy. Maybe this signing helps make up for the whole Alamo thing haha.

Probsbly doesn’t really move the needle tho.

Another re ed John B post.

Do you understand that the guard spots have room for 6? That players get in foul trouble, or get injured? Does your brain factory reset every summer? Act like you have watched NBA basketball before.

Good end of bench insurance. Seems like all the most recent moves are giving them tons of flexibility to make a move should it open up. Spurs are usually in trade rumors for bait but there will likely be a lot of legs on the rumors this year.

They really are making great moves to that end.

I wonder if this is like the Malachi Flynn signing last season. He's a vet that may or may not make an NBA roster next season. Send him to camp and see if he shows out.

Worst case he's an assignee to Austin and adds more talent to that organization. Best case he actually shows enough talent to fill a need on the big roster.

They got us Fox for 25 cents on the dollar. We can throw them a few minimum contracts for end of benchers.

They're a major, major player in the NBA now and have been for a while. I'd rather work with them than against them tbh.

I would have preferred someone like Jordan Miller from the clippers organization, but he'll be an end of bench guy, so meh. Hope he can play defense even as as 14th - 15th guy.

Spurs will likely keep one no-name who can hit threes. Camp and preseason should be fun for the gunners.
