"Two and half years into the war the President is finally willing to discuss the appalling number of Iraqi civilian deaths. It is far past time for this sort of admission from this White House. While the President stated that about 30,000 Iraqi civilians have died since the start of the war other studies have put those figures at closer to 100,000. The Administration has a moral obligation to inform the American public of the real price of war. It should immediately release all information they have on the number of civilian deaths and injuries caused by the United States' war and occupation.

"For years, the Administration has refused to even acknowledge civilian deaths. Retired General Tommy Franks stated Administration position when he said that the US military does not do body counts. I have repeatedly spoken on the House floor, and written the Department of Defense to demand this information. I have not yet received a real response.

"The White House, now on record as keeping this information, must now release this information. The American public, and Congress, will demand nothing less."
    Common Dreams

A study release a year ago put this figure at 100,000. Iraqbodycount.org has a figure of between 27383 to 30892.

Here is a link to the full Dennis Kucinich statement.

I was almost floored to see the WH put out any 'semi-official' number at all, given their position on 'body counts'. 30,000 seems low.

    Backstory: 1,000 days in Iraq

Tuesday marks the 1,000th day of the war in Iraq. Apart from the debate over its purpose and progress, here are some basic facts about the conflict.

    Compiled by Daniel Enemark

    Casualties
    • 2,149 US forces have been killed, including 44 women.

    • 15,880 US soldiers have been wounded.

    • On average, 37 US soldiers a month are shipped home because of '"psychiatric" problems.

    • 201 non-US Coalition forces have been killed in Iraq, including 98 from Britain, 27 from Italy, 18 from Ukraine, 17 from Poland, 13 from Bulgaria, and 11 from Spain.

    • 25,000 to 30,000 is a rough estimate of the number of Iraqi civilians who lost their lives for war-related reasons since May 2003.

    • An estimated 3,700 Iraqi police and military have died since June 2003.

Sources: The Brookings Ins ution, GlobalSecurity.org, The Wall Street Journal, Iraq Minister of Interior

But Victory is the goal ane we must not lose sight of that fact.
We broke it...now we own it.

now it's wrong to mention tookie williams here, after all the United States always does the right thing right (wink wink). You ought to be ashamed of mentioning a convicted killer and founder of the waful crips to our genocidal actions in Iraq, after all we're giving them the "gift" of superimposing our democracy, which ought to be considered far more important than the sparse numbers of casulties they are paying to get it. Besides, they're just sand monkeys anyway.
