The season has been going on for over a month (longer if you're a bowhunter) now, and I was wondering if anyone has taken a trophy buck down there in South Texas by now. Just curious.

Picked one out. Haven't shot it yet. Hopefully this weekend.

Disclaimer: Your definition of "trophy buck" and mine may not coincide.

I took a e during bow season out in Rocksprings, and am planning on taking my bow out to my place in Gonzales this weekend if it's not raining too hard.

I hunted in Starr County Thanksgiving week and I saw nothing but does. It was an average of 92 degrees and there was absolutley no action. I wish I was there durring the cold front last week. My dad took a 14 pointer down that scored just over 200 Boone and Crockett.

I am CosmicCowboy and I am a Trophy Hunterholic.... After years of obsessive whitetail trophy hunting I quit cold turkey about 6 years ago. I spent an obscene amount of time and money doing it and finally just said "Enough!"...I am talking way overboard...I ran a 13,000 acre lease between Freer and Laredo for years plus did several trips to Saskatchewan enjoying their beautiful -30 degree winters...I was passing up 4 1/2 yr old 165 class deer every year telling myself "he will be bigger next year"...I know I will never be cured but am just taking it one day at a time...

You're right about it being very expensive. But, man I envy you. Saskatchewan! I've hunted South Texas, from Hebronville to Zapata to Hidalgo County. But I think whitetail hunting in Canada has to be the greatest.

I never got into "horn hunting" in my 30+ years of hunting, just doesn't trip my trigger. I'm much more interested in putting meat in the freezer.

Never hunted Canada, but I've hunted Elk in NM and chased big muleys in SD.

Anything that I kill, I eat. Even javelina. I believe that if you end an animals life you must use what you've taken from Mother Earth. I really don't chase the Muy Grande either, but I love deer meat. By the way, what kind of compound do you shoot 1369?

It's pretty brutal but the chance is always there of seeing a monster which keeps you pumped...I have hunted with three different outfitters there and they all do it basically the same...they build these little 4X4X4 ground blinds out of plywood (usually covered in snow)...you would watch trails or oat/hay piles...I would walk in before daylight and leave after dark...temps would usually be about -20 but I have hunted in -40 and coffee froze in the thermos. You have to be pretty stable mentally to spend 6 or 7 days straight in those conditions and stay focused...we called them "nut huts"...most guys would crack after the first 2-3 days and shoot the first thing that walked out...I passed up several 160-170 class deer looking for a "bigger" one...

Yes sir. PSE Fireflight, but I started tinkrering with traditional archery this year. I flintknap as well and I'm working on a primitive self bow. I really want to take down something with a stone tipped arrow.

I'm not that committed (and don't practice enough) to go traditional, but it would be cool to ventilate something using equipment made with my own two hands.

Saw a guy on TV once hunting with an atlatl he made himself. Now that's hardcore.

Y'all heard the Ron White skit making fun of his brother-in-law the deer hunter? I was rolling on the floor laughing at it the first time I heard it...

I've hunted In Hebbronville the past 2 years. Out HWY 285 about 10 miles from town. I'm going this weekend actually and I'm afraid I starting to show signs of a sickness as well. I go any chance I get and I've started to pass on a lot of deer thinking the smae thing....He'll get bigger next year.

I've played with an atlatl and a couple of darts that I made. And yep, it is hardcore. I can't imagine sneaking up on game holding a dart that's almost 7 feet long and then throwing it with any success. Hitting a bail of hay isn't that hard, but a living and moving target has got to be the ultimate. Here's how to make one. link

Funny...You Texans hide in bushes, with camouflage & stink bait for hours, just to nab just one measly 90lb deer....In So Cal we go to Home Depot & plant red roses...Then in the morning find 200 lb bucks pre hung on our fences...

Deer can do a lot of damage to home landscapes, but does it justify putting up ed fences? Now the city of Duarte CA has prohibited them ... is the latest example of a larger problem. Saul Gonzalez goes inside...
