LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Former President Gerald R. Ford has been admitted to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California, for tests, his top aide said Tuesday.
The 38th president's chief of staff, Penny Circle, said Ford, 92, would be released when the tests were completed.

"He's in for medical tests, routine tests," Circle told The Associated Press. She said the tests are scheduled each December. "He's had a horrible cold and he still hasn't gotten over it."

Ford was hospitalized in 2003 after suffering a dizzy spell while playing golf in 96-degree weather.

He also suffered a mild stroke during the 2000 Republican National Convention.

Three other past presidents are still living: George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

In 1976 Carter defeated Ford in his attempt to become an elected president -- Ford had assumed office in 1974 to replace President Richard Nixon who resigned during the Watergate scandal.

Ford first joined the Nixon administration in October 1973 when he was named to replace Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, who was facing charges of conspiracy, extortion and bribery.

Ya know, in a metaphoric way, this kinda describes the Ford Interm-Presidency.
