sorry i don't know, we have SBC DSL so i have no clue
Does anyone know if I can just purchase a wireless router and a wireless network card for my laptop without upgrading my current Roadrunner subscription to the wireless. They want $50 to install the wireless service and I don't want to pay that on top of an extra $15 a month for it. They told me that it wouldn't work but I don't believe them.
sorry i don't know, we have SBC DSL so i have no clue
They lie..
Just buy a hub with NAT and put the cable modem on it. That way they will only see 1 ethernet address talking to the modem...
What happens behind that is none of there BEEPing business ..
BTW Roadrunner is the worst most unreliable network service on earth.
sure, hook up a wireless router, like a linksys wrt45g, to your RR cable modem, and off you go. I did it with RR and then again with Grandecom. simple and reliable. the cable co doesn't care, and requires no extra payment.

Separate issue: in the last few weeks, after 3+ years of no problem, using my cellphone next to my Thinkpad trashes the wireless link from the Thinkpad to my wireless router.
Is there any one in particular that you would recommend?
D-link. There are so many kinda I would suggest you just search on some product reviews. Try broadband reports forums. I don't remember the url offhand. Should be a section in there for wireless and a roadrunner section.
Midget, either DLink or Netgear but definetly nothing Linksys. And share your wireless with your neighbors.
Or if you don't want to, enable WEP or change the MAC settings to only allow the computers you want it to allow.

Net gear is the way to go. I did exactly what you are talking about. I didn't want to pay the 50 on top of the 15. them.
What model router and wireless card did you get and how is the speed?
Have you tried a different transmission channel?Separate issue: in the last few weeks, after 3+ years of no problem, using my cellphone next to my Thinkpad trashes the wireless link from the Thinkpad to my wireless router. If you're reasonably close to the router, the transmission speed will be faster than your cable modem signal. Most any "g" router should do unless you plan on transferring big files between computers in the same network wirelessly.how is the speed?
I have mine hooked up to a wireless router and it works great. Contrary to some, they actually encouraged me to buy my own equipment when I signed up so I wouldn't have to pay to *rent* their equipment. I've had TWC for years and have never had problems with it that didn't involve something stupid I'd done myself.![]()

Yes you can. I did/am.
I'm done being a nice guy. I'm cutting that off. I think someone is stealing my because my PayPal account was compromised yesterday and last week one of my credit cards was used at Westernunion.com.

Yea, I never have had trouble with RR. I like it. very reliable. I don't know what Vashner is talking about.![]()
It's the Netgear RP614NA. It's teh same one I had when I did use Roadrunner wireless year ago. It's nothing special and gets the job done. It's like 25 bucks on Ebay or some . The speed is pretty good, it's at 54.0 mbps. It's not 100.00 mbps like when I connected directly to the modem, but any one who says the difference in speed bothers them is lying. I have a Dell 8600 and it came with an internal Intel Proset wireless card. It's good.
Timewarner wanted to charge a 50 installation fee a few months ago when I moved to the new house. That made no sense.
They happen to have a well known problem nationwide with service. Why do you think they have those commercials about the cable going out in storms?
It happens to me everytime... I am on the service fringe but it's supposed to be a "fiber" backbone so for 50 bucks a month the should work.
Where do you live Vash? I've had great internet service with them.
I have never had trouble with their service. It's always ++++!!
I have never had any problem with service...I was late with the bill once....I have been with them for 5 yrs or so. I have had limited problems, my one complaint is you have to sometimes wait a week for a repair crew. I had a problem last year and they told me this.....I just went and got a new modem at the branch office and eureka....back up and running at no cost.
The problem biggest I had is with the ELECTRICITY going out....not cable.
boutons, there was something in the Tech news last week about the
cellphone or cordless phone issue and wireless. I will see if I can find it
and post it, if I can. Seems like it was in Bombays column.
In my experience with RR, they've been pretty unreliable too.
I had Road Runner since it was first introduced into SA. I was like customer 300 and went to one of the first self install classes they offered. I have hardly ever had problems with it. It has gone out but very, very, very rarely and that's been since ~ 2000. Storms shouldn't effect your connection at all unless the power goes out. You should call and have a tech come out and check your wiring for shorts or possibly poor installation. The cable going to your modem shouldn't have any sharp bends in it and shouldn't be placed near a TV or another RR cable jack. Don't use a splitter on the RR cable to run a TV off it either.
RR is super fast and is WAY more reliable than DSL.
