Bush favourite trails as Shias dominate poll
Kurds may get more seats than larger Sunni blocks

    The Guardian

The Bush administration's hopes for a government of national unity in Iraq, led by its favoured candidate, Ayad Allawi, the secular and pro-western former prime minister, received a setback last night.

Preliminary results showed that most voters opted for Sunni and Shia religious parties in a parliament in which nationalists who want an early timetable for a withdrawal of US and British troops will have a stronger voice.

Mr Allawi's camp, which includes liberals, communists, and his own secular followers, cried foul yesterday as did the main Sunni coalition known as the Consensus Front, which includes the Islamic party. The election commission has at least a week to examine hundreds of complaints of violations on polling day and this is likely to be followed by weeks of haggling over government posts.

But the results suggest that the Shia religious bloc which dominates the current government will retain most, if not all, the 140 seats it holds, giving it a majority in the 275-seat parliament. It needs two-thirds to choose a president - a mainly ceremonial post - along with a prime minister.
Eliminate your political opposition using fundamentalist religious doctrine as partisanship and make sure that the women are kept in their place in society. Hummm..sounds too familiar.

The idea is to let them pick not us.

I seriously ING doubt you give a about women and or just about anything else peacefull in Iraq.

It was the America Soldier, the Marine, Soldiers, Airmen and civilians deployed and at home that brings the freedom...

Not armchair ing Bush bashers with no options other than cut and run and then give up all your secrets and the same time as ing crying in 911 report for more secrets.

Actually the original Bush plan was to not even hold elections anytime soon. Instead they were ready to appoint Amad Chilabi as the next american 'puppet' in Iraq, but Sistani and his Shiite followers demanded elections.

So if they end up with another totalitarian regime (like the one we wasted 2000+ American lives ousting), we'll consider our military effort a success?

Spreading democracy is a good thing, but when people vote, politicians must listen, and right now, I'm hearing the collective voice of the Iraqi people, and they are saying 'Thanks America, now get out'.
