    STEPH INFECTION

    By MARC BERMAN

December 22, 2005 -- The Garden finally turned its venom on Stephon Marbury late in the third quarter last night. The fans had booed the Knicks plenty this season, but only collectively.
That is, until last night's latest Knick nightmare, punctuated by Marbury getting hammered by boos as the Coney Island product walked all alone to the bench with 3:13 left in the third after being replaced by Quentin Richardson.

If it's possible, it got uglier, nastier, more depressing at the Garden as the defending champion Spurs annihilated the sloppy, defenseless Knicks, 109-96.

The Spurs, who shot 56 percent, led by 32 late in the third before fourth-quarter garbage time.

With the Knicks losing their seventh straight — and fifth straight at home — to fall 12 games under .500 at 6-18, Isiah Thomas' two-year anniversary as Knick president today is a bleak one.

"That's New York," Marbury said of the boos after getting schooled by Tony Parker. "I understand New York. I know I'm going to be blamed. I'm not worried about that. What is fair? A lot of people look at it as you're making a lot of money, and don't think that's fair. I'm going out and doing what's asked of me. Everyone has to take the blame collectively."

To put the season's wreckage in perspective, the Knicks last season didn't fall 12 games under .500 until Feb. 11. They finished 33-49.

Thomas was in the tunnel and could hear the Marbury boos. He said over the weekend the club is building around Larry Brown, Channing Frye and Eddy Curry, not Marbury, who finished with 14 points, seven assists and three turnovers.

Brown issued another mea culpa. "They [the Spurs] are well-coached, much better coached than we are," Brown said. "They move the ball better, they defend better.

"I thought when we started this season, even though we were losing games, we were making progress," Brown added. "Now it seems like we're not making progress. They were scripting plays. I didn't think we competed until the end."

The most telling scene of the lack of respect the Knicks receive came at the end of the first quarter. The Spurs had left the court, believing the quarter was over, but the referees put .4 on the clock.

The Spurs returned to the court, and an impatient San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, his club already ahead 29-16, was heard telling an assistant, "We'll just give them the two [points] and start the next quarter." And Popovich is Brown's best friend.

Parker had a double-double (18 points, 7-of-10, 10 assists), and his forays to the hole so infuriated Knick veteran Antonio Davis that he looked to square off with Tim Duncan.

Davis committed a hard foul on Parker, bashed to the floor by a Davis elbow. Parker hopped up angrily and Duncan and two other Spurs confronted Davis. "I guess [Tim] was trying to show his tough side," Davis smirked.

After things seemed to quiet, Davis pushed Duncan in the shoulder, looking to egg him on. Duncan wanted no part of it.

"I'm frustrated, I'll be honest," Davis said.

The Spurs led by 13 after one, 21 at halftime and 31 after three quarters. Marbury's ugliest moments came late in the first half. He made a bullet pass to a covered Maurice Taylor. The ball was knocked away, and a fastbreak ensued with Parker faking on Marbury for a layup.

Moments before, Marbury dribbled the ball off his foot out of bounds. The night's first boos came with 2:11 left in the half when Marbury missed a quick shot and Parker slithered in for another fastbreak layup. The boos would last the rest of the night — the harshest ones reserved for the point guard.

    A sentence I never thought I'd read.

    It is true though.

Were you guys watching the New York feed of the game? Kenny The Jet Smith was very complimentary of SA, more so than ever before.

Also they had a trivia question.

Of the 99 championship team, what players are still playing in the NBA?

    Malik and Tim, right?

Those Knicks fans are tough, but Marbury's a prick, so I don't think it's that unfair.

    "It is true though."

What's true? That NY Knicks fans boo individual Knicks without cause? and that Stephon did nothing to bring on the booing?

"Kenny The Jet Smith was very complimentary of SA"

Big of him. It wasn't a good night to be trashing a team that was up as much as 30 points.
