I like that. I can see him making the final round at least, but is his release fast enough to get through all the racks ?

Night after night, Bruce Bowen goes about his business without much fanfare. He guards the league's elite perimeter players, while staying out of the spotlight that shines on Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.
The spotlight for those three All-Star caliber players is well deserved, but shouldn’t there be room for the best defender on the best defensive team? Bowen arguably has as much impact night in and night out as any Spur.
Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves, things were no different as Bowen chased Wally Szczerbiak around the SBC Center.
On the other side of the court, Bowen chipped in a season-high 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting. He also pulled down five rebounds and maintained his place atop the league in three-point field goal percentage, knocking down his only attempt from beyond the arc.
As the season began, many thought there would be a reduction in Bowen's minutes. After all, the Spurs had bolstered their depth at the swing spots with the acquisition of veteran Michael Finley to go along with Bowen, Ginobili and Brent Barry. And at 34-years-old, Bowen would undoubtedly be on the decline. Right?
Wrong.
Bowen, who arguably keeps himself in the best shape of any player on the team, is averaging 8.0 points and 3.7 rebounds in a career-high 35 minutes per game, while continuing to be the best perimeter defender in the league.
While Ginobili, Finley and Barry have spent time in street clothes this season, Bowen hasn't missed a game since 2001. Playing in 305 straight contests, Bowen holds the Spurs' franchise record.
So as the All-Star game approaches, wouldn't it be great if Bowen could take part in the weekend's festivities along with a couple of his teammates?
No one would advocate giving a defender who scores eight points a game a spot on the All-Star roster. But Bowen deserves to be there. And there's a way for him to be.
There's no skills compe ion for defense but shooting 50% from downtown this season, Bowen is the league's best. Whoever hands out the invitations to the 3-point Shootout needs to give Bowen a call.
Though Bowen wouldn’t be a favorite to win the event, it’d be nice to see him as part of the weekend that celebrates the NBA’s best players. And who knows, perhaps a little notoriety will lead to a much deserved Defensive Player of the Year award at season’s end.
I like that. I can see him making the final round at least, but is his release fast enough to get through all the racks ?
Ya...Bowen takes a lotta time to set up his 3-point shot. It's almost textbook. I don't seem him whipping out dozens of them in a timed contest.
Still, I like the thought. The best percentage 3 point shooter in the league should be there...even if it's to honor his defense.
Which is way weird.
very true , he should at least get an invitation.
I like that idea. Kudos to BB for leading the entire NBA on 3pt fg percentage. Bruce should be invited, and he should go and just have a good time.
He would prolly only sink the racks in the corners if he went anyways.
His spot his shot.
bruce is smart. He only works on shots that he will shoot in games. I think he could make it to the finals of the 3pt shootout.
It would be really cool to see him there
Nice article![]()
I don't see how Bruce can possibly be passed up for DoY. It would be most disturbing.
