Former Texas quarterback Major Applewhite is set to join new Rice coach Todd Graham's staff as offensive coordinator, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Chronicle on Saturday night.
Applewhite, who spent the past season as quarterbacks coach at Syracuse, toured the Rice campus this past week and reached an agreement Friday.
Syracuse ranked 115th out of 119 Division I-A schools in total offense (257.4 yards per game) during a last-place finish in the Big East during Greg Robinson's first year as head coach. The Orange were 105th in passing offense with an average 150.8 yards per game.
Rice was 117th nationally in passing (103.3) this season.
Before arriving at Syracuse, Applewhite spent two years as a graduate assistant at Texas, where he worked with the offensive coaching staff. A native of Baton Rouge, La., Applewhite was 22-8 as a starter for the Longhorns and set school records for passing yards (8,353), touchdown passes (60) and total offense (8,059) from 1998-2001.
Just a step on heading back to Austin. He'll coach the horns some day.
Heart of a fockin' Lion he has.
Good to see, I have a lot of respect for Major. If Mack wouldn't have benched him for Chrissy Texas probably would have won the NC Major's senior year.
Awesome! I was just remembering how clutch Applewhite was after watching Simms totally blow it yesterday.
All he needs now is an Offense to coordinate...He will have his work cut out for him.
LOL @ the Simms comment. I was watching the game with some friends and my comment was "if this is anything like his time at Texas he'll throw a pick with the game on the line."
or have his receiver "drop" a perfect throw to tie the game, your rookie tb fumble a TD away, etc...LOL @ the Simms comment. I was watching the game with some friends and my comment was "if this is anything like his time at Texas he'll throw a pick with the game on the line."
