Okay I need a link for this - I "know" the answer but I don't have a credible link to support it.

    Here is the question :

When a player makes a field goal attempt and is fouled in the act of shooting does it count as an attempt ? - I know the answer is no unless it goes in and then it counts. But where is this written ?

I did - I couldn't find the break down. - I know it doesn't count from my playing days but I can't find it written anywhere. The arguement comes from Kobe - this dude at work is saying his shot attempts are so high because he gets fouled so much and I am trying to tell him those attempts don't even count and so in reality Kobe shoots about 8 more shots per game than he is credited for.

I don't believe his shot attempts after getting fouled count. Kobe does shoot a lot, if I was him, I would too.

    KB avg 27 FGA/games.

you want to convict him of acutally taking 35 FGA?

    It's to somebody's "credit" for making 35 FGA/game?

Someones' got to. I feel as long as he shoots 45-50% he can take close to 30 shots. He's even averaging 35% from 3 point land as well.

Of course your shot attempt doesn't count if you get fouled in the act and you miss. It counts if it's an "And 1" though.

I don't know where it is in the NBA rulebook, but that's just a kindergarten basketball rule.

As Kori has stated, if you are fouled while taking a shot, the shot does not count. If the field goal is made, then it counts as a shot.

Is the dude at work also that guy that thinks it's French Benefits, instead of Fringe Benefits?

It's an interesting question -- its not really a rule of the game; it's a rule of scorekeeping. I would guess that there's a handbook for scorekeepers somewhere, but I wouldn't know where you'd find it.

If you're really curious about it, you might e-mail someone with the APBR (link). They're most likely to know the answer.

I couldn't take a website seriously who said this (for the logo):

hence why I said I already know the answer to the question but I need to "prove" it.

Where to find the official statistical rules is a good question.

I remember this came up when somebody asked what a team rebound was (just a bookkeeping stat so that rebounds = all missed shots). I think somebody posted a source, but I can't remember what.

This is the closest I could find to an "authority" or "link." It's not an "NBA" site, but it's general basketball rules:

    http://eba-stats.com/gloS_glo.htm

"Field Goal Attemps (FGA). A Field Goal Attemp will be chargued to a player every time he shoots, throws or taps a live ball at his opponentes basket when he is attempting to score a goal (except when he is fouled in the act of shooting and the goal is not made.)"

And, all the misspellings goes to show you how reliable (or professional) the source is ... attemps, chargued, opponentes.

Maybe it was translated from French?
