Well, it's that time of year again -- and the Spurs actually have a need or two given Manu's injury and their reported search for an athletic big man. Maybe Holt loosens the pursestrings just this little bit.....

There's James Maye of course, if he had a good workout. I'm a bit busy right now, but I'll just throw out a couple of swingman names if you care to look them up:

    Erik Daniels - Fayetteville Patriots
Ime Udoka - Fort Worth Flyers
    Theron Smith - Florida Flame

and my homer favorite Ramel Curry - Austin Toros (Andre Emmett is a black hole, I think Ramel actually has PG potential)

    Who you pimping?

Brent Barry, Nick van exel, Beno are better than anyone on the market. Plus, they already know the system. Chemistry is the problem, not bodies.

I still don't see what they see in James Maye because he's not even that good in the CBA. But perhaps he had a good workout and they are considering him.

I think they should give Theron Smith a look... I'm not sure who else. I will look around.

Have you seen him play at all, ChumpDumper? Looks like his stats are getting better and better.

I saw him play against the Toros twice. He sucked complete ass in the first, fouled everyone in sight and barely stayed on the floor. Played great in the second though, covered three posistions well on D and was hitting from everywhere inside the arc on O. I was very impressed -- I thought his offense was much more limited than he showed. He's in great shape and really seems to relish being the defensive fireman for his team.

I think were through playing Florida this season, though the Flame might show up on NBAtv every once in a while. I'd have to check the schedule.

    For the swingman :
I think it will depend on how long Manu is out.
If we sign a guy to one or two 10 days contracts, he should be a good defender (Barry, Finley, NVE aren't great defender).

Now look at our calendar and the main opposite SG/SF, to look at what type of player we need (a SG or a SF):

Sun 22 Denver : Anthony (maybe not enough time to sign a guy)
    Tue 24 Charlotte : Wallace
    Wed 25 @ NO/Okla. City : no real threat
Sat 28 Minnesota : Wally (Bowen can handle him : no foul trouble)
    Mon 30 @ Utah : AK47 (on fire)
Wed 1 @ Portland : no real threat
Thu 2 @ Golden State : Richardson, Dunleavy (good since the beggining of the month) and Pietrus.
Wed 8 @ Toronto : no real threat
Fri 10 @ New Jersey : Carter, Jefferson
    Sun 12 @ Indiana : Jackson, Jones
    Mon 13 @ Cleveland : James
Wed 15 @ Philadelphia : no real threat

My point of view : sign a long SF (for playing against guys like James and AK47) for a 10 days contract before the Charlotte games and to a second 10 days contract before the Toronto games. (Theron Smith or Erik Daniels)

    For the athletic big:
No ten days contract (we still have 6 PF/C), Trade Nazr for a guy like Reggie Evans.

Yeah, he definitely has the tools to be a defensive stopper. He's the exact body type of the player the Spurs need. Defensively, he reminds me of a hybrid between Tayshaun Prince and Bruce Bowen. Of course he's not at that level yet, but he could get there with the right tutelage.

Offensively, I'm sure he's a work in progress ... but he can't be much worse than Bowen was when he joined the team.

He seems like he'd be a bit more Artest-like in his defensive assigments (2-3-4) than Bowen (1-2-3), so your comparison is pretty valid. He looks like he might have enough range to be able to avoid clogging up the halfcourt sets (if he hits shots like he did that second game), but a three-pointer would probably have him back in the league already.

Damn, I just looked at his stats and Theron is on fire.

    Last six games:

    29 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals
    10 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal
    29 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks
    19 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists
    20 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists
    26 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists

The Spurs need to sign this guy ASAP. His offense has apparently improved drastically. Combine that with his top notch defense and whoever signs him is going to get a damn good player.

Someone is going to call him up. Hopefully it's the Spurs.

True. Theron has been on fire since Wright left six games ago.

I think the T'Wolves called up the wrong player. Florida lost it's final four games with Wright on the roster. Since Theron has been given the reigns, Florida is 6-0 with an average margin of victory of 12. They are also averaging 110 points per game during that time period.

Theron is the real deal. He's dominating now that he's The Man on his team. He shot 90%+ in preseason with the Nuggets. He impressed me a couple years ago and it looks like he's gotten even better since then.

He's 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds of defensive stopper material.

    Sign him up.

Well, Bracey was their draft pick, but he was never going to develop into a point guard on a team with Andre Barrett. That's one of the pitfalls of the current D-League setup; NBA teams have no real say in how their players are used.

And three of those last four losses were to the Toros, who pretty much owned them this season save one OT loss.

Smith is responding well to becoming a focus of the offense though, that's for sure.

BTW - Ramel Curry just hit a last-second shot to give the Toros a 108-106 win over Albuquerque.

And Ken Johnson is back with the T-Birds, LJ. Apparently he was waived because they needed to sign another player while he was recovering from an ankle injury. He's blocking a wad of shots again though his rebounding isn't up to scratch.

    Thanks for the info.
Poor Bobcats : Wallace, Okafor, May, Rush and Ely are out.

Maybe we should sign Charlize after all.
