He had more homeruns than Damon and a little less stolen bases. Their defense is about even.

The Boston Red Sox are nearing completion on deals that would bring them Cleveland Indians outfielder Coco Crisp and free agent shortstop Alex Gonzalez, according to Boston newspaper reports.
The Boston Herald and Boston Globe, citing unnamed baseball sources, reported that the Red Sox and Indians had agreed in principle on a deal that would send Crisp to Boston.
Both newspapers, also citing multiple major league sources, reported the team was working on a deal for Crisp as well as a free-agent deal with Gonzalez, formerly of the Florida Marlins. They said the Red Sox would include third-base prospect Andy Marte, who was acquired from the Atlanta Braves in the Edgar Renteria trade, as well as relief pitcher Guillermo Mota.
While the Herald reported the Indians would send prospects to Boston, The Globe reported in Monday's editions that the Red Sox would acquire setup man David Riske and catcher Josh Bard in the deal. Boston would then give up catcher Kelly Shoppach in addition to Marte and Mota.
The Herald reported the deal hinged on the Indians' ability to acquire another outfielder, possibly in a trade for the Phillies' Jason Michaels or through signing free agent Jeff DaVanon, formerly of the Angels.
Gonzalez hit .245 with 81 homers and 375 RBI in eight seasons with the Marlins. The 28-year-old was an All-Star in 1997 and is considered a solid defensive player.
Since Johnny Damon signed with the New York Yankees last month, center field and a leadoff hitter have become a top priority for the Red Sox. Crisp could fill both voids.
Although he played mostly left field for the Indians last season, Crisp came up through the organization as a center fielder.
The switch-hitter batted .300 with 42 doubles, 16 homers and 69 RBI in 145 games in 2005. He had 44 walks against 81 strikeouts in 594 at-bats and posted a .345 on-base percentage. The 26-year-old hit .324 with 11 homers against right-handers and .252 with five homers against left-handers.
In Marte, the Indians would get one of the top hitting prospects in the game.
While being among the youngest players in each league he has appeared, Marte has averaged .280, 32 doubles and 20 homers over four full seasons in the minors. The 22-year-old hit .275 with 20 homers and 74 RBI in 109 games at Triple-A Richmond of the International League last season.
In 24 games for Atlanta, Marte hit just .140 with four RBI in 57 at-bats.
Mota, a reliable power pitcher who was acquired from Florida in the Josh Beckett trade in November, was 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA in 56 games in 2005. In seven seasons, he is 22-24 with a 3.61 ERA and seven saves.
Riske, 29, went 3-4 for Cleveland last season, posting a 3.10 ERA in 58 appearances. He struck out 48, while walking just 15 in 72 2/3 innings.

The chances of Coco Crisp landing in Boston seem to be shrinking by the hour.
The Red Sox and Indians continued to talk to each other -- as well as to a potential third club, the Reds -- on Thursday. But there were indications that the Indians were beginning to have second thoughts about dealing Crisp.
An official of one team that spoke with the Indians reported Thursday he got the impression the odds of Cleveland trading Crisp had sunk below 50-50.
Nevertheless, the Indians and Red Sox were still discussing ways they could rework the six-player trade that collapsed Tuesday over concerns about the health of reliever Guillermo Mota.
Multiple sources say Mota didn't technically "fail" his physical with the Indians. But his examination raised enough questions that the Indians have told Boston they will keep Mota only if the Red Sox upgrade the rest of the package, which originally had Mota, third-base prospect Andy Marte and catching prospect Kelly Shoppach heading for Cleveland, with Crisp, reliever David Riske and catcher Josh Bard landing in Boston.
The Red Sox, however, prefer not to trade away one of their top young pitching prospects, Manny Delcarmen, whom Cleveland likes. So it appears Boston has turned its attention back to Cincinnati to see if it can put together a deal for left fielder Austin Kearns. The Red Sox then would turn around and deal Kearns to Cleveland for Crisp, with several other players (yet to be determined) also switching area codes.
Cleveland also is believed to have talked directly with the Reds about Kearns. While interim GM Brad Kuhlman has told a number of teams this week that he has the authority to make a trade, other baseball people who have talked to new Reds owner Bob Castellini say Castellini is reluctant to rush into a major deal just days after taking over the club.
The team that may come out worst in all of this, though, is the Phillies. Had the original trade gone through, they would have wound up trading outfielder Jason Michaels to Cleveland for reliever Arthur Rhodes.
But an official of one team in touch with the Phillies said they were "not real optimistic" about coming away with Rhodes or any other reliever, because they feared their portion of the trade was "disintegrating." That's because if Cleveland holds onto Crisp or winds up dealing for an outfielder like Kearns, it no longer would need Michaels. The Phillies then would probably hang onto Michaels until spring training and shop him for a setup man in the spring.

A day after Crisp's trade from Cleveland to the Red Sox nearly fell apart, the two sides were close enough to reconstructing the trade Friday that the Indians tentatively agreed to a companion deal that paves the way for the Crisp trade.
On Friday, the Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians reached agreement on a Jason Michaels-for-Arthur Rhodes trade, which could trigger a bigger swap involving the Red Sox.

A source told ESPN.com on Friday that the Boston-Cleveland trade headlined by Crisp is being described as "likely," though neither deal was considered "done" as of late Friday afternoon."
Rhodes was in Philadelphia taking a physical, two people familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been finalized.
If the trade is completed, the Indians could turn around and send center fielder Crisp to the Red Sox to fill the gap left when free agent Johnny Damon left for the New York Yankees.

But the Red Sox had made Crisp their No. 1 target to replace Damon both in center field and in the leadoff hole, and they weren't thrilled with any of their other options. So they worked feverishly to piece the Crisp trade back together.
It's believed they have offered to included a prospect other than Delcarmen, plus some sort of future considerations if Mota has any significant health issues during the season.
Rhodes went 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 47 games for the Indians last year. But the left-handed reliever missed most of the final two months for family reasons.
Michaels hit .304 with four homers and 31 RBI for the Phillies. He platooned in center field with Kenny Lofton.
Michaels recently was put on six months' probation and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service following a fight with a Philadelphia police officer last year.
Crisp was a sparkplug and fan favorite for Cleveland, hitting .300 with 16 home runs, 69 RBI, and stealing 15 bases.
Mota went 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA and two saves in 56 games last season with the Florida Marlins.
