i don't understand WHY Avery Johnson has CLINCHED coaching the western all-stars already?... i mean i read the news and i just dont get it... i have nothing against Avery, I love him and I'm happy he's going!... but i just don't understand how it is that it's CLINCHED?...

    (THIS I TOOK FROM NBA.COM)

"Head coaches for the East and West All-Star teams are based on teams with the best winning percentage in each conference following the Sunday games (Feb. 5) played two weeks prior to the All-Star Game."

so... if the spurs have a winning percentage of 0.767 (33-10) and the mavericks' winning percentage is 0.762 (32-10)... HOW IS IT THAT THE MAVERICKS HAVE THE BEST RECORD POSSIBLE????... PLUS ITS NOT EVEN FEBRUARY YET!...

OH OK OK OK... MAYBE U'LL CALL ME AN IGNORANT RIGHT NOW BUT I THINK I JUST FIGURED IT OUT... COULD IT BE A COACH CANT BE THE COACH FOR THE ALL-STAR GAME ON BACK TO BACK SEASONS? IF I HAVE WASTED UR TIME, IM SORRY :-)

It is an inane rule IMO - the best (at least by their teams regular season record) should coach against each year.

It will be fun watching Avery Johnson coach though and one has to admit he is doing a darn good job.

Actually, I think the rule is that one TEAM'S coach cannot coach two years in a row. Someone pointed out that Rick Carlisle coached two years in a row for the EC, but it was when he went from Detroit to Indy in a coaching change.

Inane or not, I bet most NBA head coaches like that rule. It may be an honor to coach an all star game once, but I bet most head coaches rather not do it if they've done it before. They probably would rather have the time off. Imagine Phil Jackson coaching the all star game like 7 times in an 8 year span. He would have been pissed if he to do that.

I think this is true. Pop always plans a weekend get-away for him and his wife for the weekend of All-Star break. He had to cancel his plans last year.

But they can serve as advisors in the Three-Point contest.

And they are under the impression that this guy will be coaching the East:

    Pop has a wife?????

What is the point of this rule? Coaches can't rewarded(in pops case punished)for having the best record, seems pointless.

Doesn't it mean each's respective conference when the article states "winning percentage in each conference"? I don't think it means overall.

Perhaps the Mavericks are so far ahead in the Western Conference percentage that no amount of winning or losing will change it.
