Anyone else been sick lately? There's been this horrible flu going around, and lucky me, I got it. My whole body aches, my throat hurts, constant coughing and wheezing and nose blowing and it feels like my brain is about to explode out my ears. Bah, humbug. Luckily I have been on a steady supply of every pain killer and decongestant known to man. So a friendly warning, watch out (especially for your kids..my mom won't let me anywhere near my little brother.)

I've been fighting off something but I think it is from the mountain cedar. I don't have your aches and cough.

If you aren't already try taking vitamins. I did earlier this year when everyone I worked with was getting sick. I caught the bug too but had less severe symptoms and recovered much more quickly.

I recommend Echinacea, Garlic, Golden Seal, Collodial Silver ( it's a liquid dietary suppliment which builds up your immune system. It's tasteless.) and of course Vitamin C.

Hope you feel better soon! I'll pray for you.

Try not to turn on the heater in your home..... and if you do, turn it on for about an hour with your windows and doors open for proper ventillation.

Keep the temperature at around 68 - 70 degrees F. This lower temperature makes it harder for any airborne pathogens to survive (and less likely to transmit the illness).

Do not sleep with any fans on... it will only dry out your throat.

Wash your sheets at most every two days but preferably on a daily basis.

    -- Get better soon.

I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling sick. I know how you feel because both my husband and I got knocked out by the flu for 10 days during the holidays
We tried everything over the counter but nothing works better then going to your doctor and getting a strong antibiotic.
    Get well soon!

I also read that you should replace your toothbrush after every cold since the germs tend to stay on it.

When I get sick I go to the dollar store to get tooth brushes. You can get five for a dollar so throwing them out after a few uses is not a big deal.

I have a question... People always say "there is a nasty/horrible flu going around". Well, is there any other kind? I never heard of a happy/good flu.

Seriously though, I hope you feel better soon.

Yup...I had it since Wednesday evening, but it wasn't too bad. I had the sore throat, stuffy nose and cough. I took DayQuil and NyQuil. NyQuil is my new best friend

Antibiotics don't work on the flu. Doctor visit is still a good idea...so they know about it and can brief you on things to do and things to watch for (and check to make sure it isn't anything else)...but all you can do otherwise is wait it out.

Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections, not viral infections. Occasionally people get a secondary bacterial infection when they are suffering from a virus and the antibiotic can clear that up, but as a general rule antibiotics just have a placebo effect on viruses for people. They can be dangerous because then people build up immunity to the antibiotics from taking them too often and then they have nothing to take when they really need something.

Yeah, if a doctor gives you antibiotics, they are basically giving you a placebo. You may THINK you are getting better from it, but you are not.

Military doctors suck, but my nephew had the flu and they wouldnt give him antibiotics for this very reason. He said that they are innefective, that people never finish the dosage properly anyways (opting to stop taking them once they feel better instead of finishing the cycle). Prescribing them for things that they are not needed for only ensures that the world's antibiotic supply will be useless in the future as germs start to mutate.

I had read about this kind of stuff, but he confirmed all those points. I came home and further reserached it, and am astounded that doctors continue to do this crap, knowing they are endangering our medicine supply. And all along, I thought the military was just being cheap (they usually are with medical care). He said just give him children's motrin to help relieve the pain and fever and wait it out. There is no 'cure' for the flu, just like a common cold.

Yep, but you'd be surprised how many docs will give people an antibiotic just to appease them.

I feel that way 24/7 from about the middle of November every year until about the end of February. But, alas, mine is just cedar fever, and it's not going away until the cedar does. I even have the aches and sometimes the fever (usually at night). This is the only time of year I love rainy days; it seems like I'm so much better on the rainy or damp days. I have a theory about that. I think the pollen gets so heavy from the humidity that it doesn't travel as far or as fast. Those are the only days I have been able to breathe for more than about 30 seconds since the middle of November.

You are preaching to the choir, pache. I live for rainy days right now. It's like glue for that pollen. This last week has been especially bad for me. Last night I took my daughter to a make-up guitar lesson and when her teacher saw me he said "Damn, do you feel as bad as you look?!?" Uhhh... Thanks a lot.. And this was from a 45/50 year old ex-hippie.

This begs the question, which is worse the flu or strep throat? I only ask cause when I was a Junior I got both in a matter of three weeks.

You know, this is the first year I have ever noticed the rainy day thing. But, this is the worst year I have ever had with the cedar, too. I always have it every year since 1974 (when I came back to Texas), but to different degrees; last year I hardly even noticed it was cedar season except for a couple of days. This year has been . I have been taking decongestants and antihistimines along with my daily Claritin. And I still can't breathe and have to sleep sitting up. I will be so glad when it's gone.

If you are in good health when you get the flu, you will probably be ok with a little rest and lots of fluids. Flu can weaken you and your immune system, though, and cause a whole host of other problems, like bronchitis and sinus infections and that probably is why you got the strep. If you are exposed to other bad stuff in your flu-weakened condition, you are a sitting duck. That's why it's a good idea to stay home if you have the flu (well, in addition to not passing it on to every one you come in contact with). Strep can be very serious because it can cause other infections, too; when my sister was 3 days old, she developed spinal meningitis from a strep infection that she got from a hospital worker in the nursery. She was 6 weeks old before she could come home from the hospital.

Man, I'm due. I haven't had the flu or a cold in 2 or 3 years. There's nothing worse than getting lighted headed while walking to the restroom to take a piss.
