Funny thing about dictators and tyrants: Very often they are meticulous record keepers. The fall of the Third Reich, the Soviet Union and Saddam Hussein's Iraq all produced treasure troves of information. In Iraq's case, there were so many do ents and records that even now only a small fraction have been translated and analyzed.
Among them are 12 hours of conversations from the early 1990s through 2000 between Hussein and his top advisers. They reveal, among other things, how Iraq was working on an advanced method of enriching uranium, how Iraq was conspiring to deceive U.N. inspectors regarding weapons of mass destruction and how these weapons might be used against the U.S.
The tapes were officially presented Sunday by former FBI translator Bill Tierney to a private conference of former weapons inspectors and intelligence experts in Arlington, Va. Tierney is an Arabic speaker who worked in the mid-1990s for the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM), the agency responsible for overseeing Iraq's disarmament.

Is it that different if you have a regime with a plan in place to develop the weapons versus already having them in place? Better to nip it in the bud.
Sure, Bush's veracity was none too comforting, but if we are going to look with 20/20 hindsight then the Hussein regime was bent on acquiring/developing WMDs in spite of the UN.
Bill Tierney, a former military intelligence officer and Arabic speaker who worked at Guantanamo Bay in 2002 and as a counter-infiltration operator in Baghdad in 2004. He was also an inspector (1996-1998) for the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) for overseeing the elimination of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles in Iraq. He worked on the most intrusive inspections during this period and either participated in or planned inspections that led to four of the seventeen resolutions against Iraq.

Suddenly Tierney's temper rose. ''They did not break!'' he shouted. ''I'm here to win. I'm here so our civilization beats theirs! Now what are you willing to do to win?'' he asked, pointing to a woman in the front row. ''You are the interrogators, you are the ones who have to get the information from the Iraqis. What do you do? That word 'torture'. You immediately think, 'That's not me.' But are we litigating this war or fighting it?'' . . .
Asked about Abu Ghraib, Tierney said that for an interrogator, ''sadism is always right over the hill. You have to admit it. Don't fool yourself – there is a part of you that will say, 'This is fun.'
Those guys were pretty funny trying to get into character while they were reading their own translations of the tapes on C-Span.

He says he knew 'first-hand' that the reprocessing of uranium was taking place at a nuclear research facility about six miles from Tarmiya. The site had an underground chamber where they used calutrons in an effort to separate electromagnetic isotopes. The facility us beneath a power plant and a water-treatment plant. He testified that his team detected radiation at the site."

Yep, according to this replay on the ABC News site, Bill Tierney was the translator for the FBI of the Saddam tapes that were passed onto ABC.
The CIA and DIA authenticated the tapes.
