Yeah, you're definetly in the minority. Bring on Thomas.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Man, sorry, I might be in the minority here, but I am just disgusted by what I'm reading on these boards. I can't believe everyone here is clamoring for Sprewell and Thomas. It's like all the championships have made y'all spoiled and you forgot what it means to be a Spurs fan, and how WE'RE DIFFERENT than all the other organizations in sports.
Maybe I have a polyanna at ude toward the Spurs, maybe I'm naive, but I'd like to think that this organization places as much (if not more) importance to a player's character and his off the court behavior as his play on the court. I thought this organziation learned from its mistakes of the past, like Rodman.
I have to say that as a Spurs fan, I'm almost more proud of what our team represents than our on the court success. Our players don't act like clowns or jackasses after every made or missed basket, they don't rack up technicals, they don't get featured in controversial stories on ESPN, and for the most part, they take less money than market value to play here. , we're even leading the charge to make the NBA a global league, which I love. My favorite sports article of all time was the one Ric Bucher wrote about our team prior to last season's playoffs,
http://spurstalk.com/forums/showthr...light=work+play
because I think it summed up what it's like to be a Spur and what a priviledge it is to root for them. We have the best thing going in all of sports, even more so than the Patriots, because after we win championships, our players don't spend the next three months telling the media how humble and disrespected they are, and our coach doesn't criticize other teams' players on The Tonight Show.
Getting either Sprewell or Thomas would go against everything this organization stands for. First off, getting Sprewell would be a complete slap in the face to PJ. Sure, his public comments might say he's okay with it, but it's public posturing. And also, Spree is D-U-N done. He sucked last year. Second, Thomas is making 14 mil this year, but refused to play hard because he was unhappy with his situation. Just gross. And I've never been impressed with his play, either. I can't believe anyone, least of all us, would want these guys. If winning les is more important to Spurs fans than anything else, I guess I'm not a real Spurs fan. To borrow a phrase from Larry Brown, I'd rather "win the right way."
Yeah, you're definetly in the minority. Bring on Thomas.
If it's all about character, how did you tolerate Glenn Robinson? Or even Nick Van Exel or Ron Mercer?
Interesting that you mention LB because he's pretty much the Anti-Spur of coaches.
But yeah, I'd rather have Sprewell and a championship than no Sprewell and no championship. In history books, you get no bonus points for being the nice guy.
whos Ron Mercer?![]()
Aaron, what about Tony Parker? Has he not been in the news everyday? Maybe you haven't heard but he's dating eva longoria! what about the incident downtown where Eva was shouting at a cop? or tony's rap album? or tony going on Opera? Or Tony going to the SAG awards? Do you really think Parker is a saint?
Yes, I'm a Spurs fan. I remember when half the team was doing coke back in the 80s. The Spurs have never been full of saints on their team. , DRob was down with the Spurs going after Sprewell in '98 when the scratch marks were still fresh on PJ's neck. Now PJ's an assistant and Pop's still after Spree.
NVE body checked a ref into the scorer's table once upon a time. Did he suddenly become a saint? , Nesterovic was probably a gangster back in Slovakia or wherever he came from. Just win, baby.
@ Tony going out and having a celebrity girl being compared to criminal activity.

Whatever helps the Spurs win. Only a sissy Spurs fan whines about who we get. If Spree is going to come in and play, then let him.
From a Pistons fan perspective, I'd love for the Spurs to sign either Tim Thomas or Latrell Sprewell, or even better BOTH!
Seriously though, neither of those guys help the Spurs. Both are talented. Both have skills to help the Spurs. But, neither would. Latrell obviously has some serious issues in evaluating his own worth and his ego will not allow to settle for a 10th man type of role, even for an championship caliber team. Tim Thomas might not appear so bad, and he has the size, shooting, and versatility to be an asset on a lot of teams. But, his mental issues run deeper. He has the all-around talent of a Lamar Odom or Grant Hill. He has the length, the guard skills, the shooting, the size. But, he's a malcontent and a self-depricating sulk. Now, despite all of Sprewell's personality problems, you could never argue that he lacks confidence. Tim Thomas is the type of depressive character that continues to search for meaning in life. He would bring the Spurs down. He would be a horrible addition. He would be a cancer in a much more subtle way that would be worst than an overt and obvious cancer.
when did Thomas or Spree become a criminal? My point is that Tony loves the limelight much unlike David or Tim and is not entirely focused on basketball as he has time to Rap and attend award shows during the season. Tony is the Anti-spur
True. I was telling Obi earlier that I hate Sprewell but if he comes and we win a Championship then I wouldn't care.
The thing is, either would be a bit player this season. You might reconsider Thomas long term though, he'd provide size, athleticism and range at that 3 spot.
The thing I find interesting is that Spurs fans want to hold players to the DRob standard, but it's not like he did himself.
I don't really think that Thomas or Spree help the team much. Thomas might be interesting.
But their past histories will have nothing to do with the decision whether or not to bring them in.
How many more times is the topic starter going to use the same post in several different threads? We got it the first time.
Tim and David aren't/weren't focused on basketball in their off time either. Tim is focused on video games and David was focused on church, etc. Tony just has different interests, but his free time is his free time.
Anyway, Spree has a criminal history - choking (though he wasn't arrested), not paying child support, driving with a suspended license, fighting, racing, and other minor activities.
You can't compare that to Tony cutting his album and going to parties.
But I understand your point![]()
character. I'll take rings with criminals over no rings with great character guys anyday.
I remember 1992. Ownership then didn't want to pull the trigger on a Willie A plus TC for Barkley trade because Barkley was deemed to be a vile character. Barkley went on to a MVP season and hitting the shot that eliminated the Spurs from the '93 playoffs. DRob + Sir Charles in their prime, with Strickland, Ellis and Elliott on the perimeter. Man, we wouldn't have had to wait until 1999.
I see your logic, but their character issues wouldn't affect the Spurs since he wouldn't be a major player, just a spot player. and if he does become a problem they just realse him, no big deal. But on the other hand if they come in (I'd rather have Thomas over Spree) and contribute and don't cause any fuse ala Glen Robinson, then its a win win situation.
Remember Sheed didn't have the best known at udes (still doesn't, leads the league in T's) in Portland and he's worked out for you guys great.
It's all about winning games. In recent history, no spur has exactly done anything out of the ordinary. If we get Spree/Thomas, they know they joined San Antonio because they want to win a championship. They wouldn't want to hamper that oppurtunity. Vanx, G Rob or S Jax weren't saints when they joined but stay(ed) under the radar. Even if they do get techs here and there, I wouldn't give a . Show passion and fight for the rings, baby.
I agree Thomas and Sprewell wouldn't do for this team.
Pop needs to play the players he's got and learn an offensive scheme.
I just wonder if his "Tony Parker goes in for a layup" play is going to hold for more than 5 minutes in a playoff game before he gets tommahawked into the basketball goal.
What is he going to do then? Go to 15 and 10, Tim Duncan? or 7 turnover Manu?
If people are looking for saints to root for, go to church. I'm serious. Nowhere in pro sports today are you going to be able to find a group of pure players. Ditto for college.
Uh, the Spurs have a new offensive scheme. They've had it for a couple of seasons, actually.
Well, if the team is that bad how'd they manage to win last season?I just wonder if his "Tony Parker goes in for a layup" play is going to hold for more than 5 minutes in a playoff game before he gets tommahawked into the basketball goal.
What is he going to do then? Go to 15 and 10, Tim Duncan? or 7 turnover Manu?
Last season Tony Parker wasn't the in the paint option.
Bruce Bowen gets more shots than the shooting guards do, yeah, thats a nice fuggin scheme there Peter.
