Though Beno had a rough night tonight on "D" he is by far the better defender. He's also been the better shooter and is healthier than Nick. So does Pop ignore Beno's play and still go with Nick?

I gotta go with yes, because Nick has more of a presence about him and sometimes that's more important from the PG position. Beno still seems to be missing something, but he's winning me over a little more each game.

Beno is playing solid no question.

But his shakyness in bringing the ball up, and swiss cheese D are too tough to get over.

If he could fix that, Id be all for it, hes prob the best pure shooter on the team.

For the Spurs, it'd be nice if Beno could win the backup spot. Like you said, he's younger and doesn't have a chronic injury.

Although currently, Nick Van Exel is still holding onto that spot in the rotation when healthy. Beno had a bad playoffs last year so at worst, NVE is a good insurance policy if Beno and/or Parker shrivel up come May and June.

If not, he should be. In fact, they should put NVE on ice until the playoffs start. Perhaps that will give him a chance to rebah his sore elbow.

I think Beno's progress this year will be enough to convince Pop that the NVE experiment was a failure, but a positive because it served to light a fire under Beno's ass (although one could argue that his Finals performance would've made him motivated anyway). TPs a good player and he has a looong contract, so he's not going anywhere, but Beno should be his backup, getting 15-18 mins a game for years to come.

    Please god, no.

Hopefully it's just because Van Exel is out for a while because his elbow's acting up. God, please.

I'm going off the comments in this thread.

Most the posters feel he's the second coming off John Stockton.

Nope - but he is better playmaker than Vanx and that I think is a thing to disscuss.

Iwould like to see him more in rotation instead of Nick. But hmm let's trus Pop.

    Van Exel is deadly.

Udrih shows signs, at times. We don't really need Udrih to create, we need somebody who can stretch the floor for Timmy. Van Exel is perfect for that.

Tony Parker doesn't really compliment Timmy well...but he's so good at what he does that we sort of work around him. Udrih does not deserve that level of respect.

No. I meant what I said.

The guy is one of the most feared offensive players in the league. We haven't had a chance to see that with the Spurs, but this guy strikes fear in the heart of most the NBA.

    Udrih scares nobody.

    No, I'm not sleep.

Yes, I did. It wasn't worth posting in. Thanks, though.

We all know that NVE is stricky and he is a shooter. But like it is with the strickers. They must to have that strick otherwise we are lost cause he can't be a playmaker. e take the risk.

Ps. man don't take my word so seriously

    I think you mean 'streaky'.

He's not considered a "streaky shooter" he's considered a "scorer".

He can get in the lane, and has a Parkeresque floater. He can sit outside and drop 3's on you. He isn't intimidate like Udrih is.

And I was learning English a centuries ago

He might be a scorrer but the streaky one. But well the scorer must score and vanx % is about 40 and from the 3 point line 34. hmmm

Yes - the elbow - but yopu have take him as he is - with the elbow or without

    "he's considered a "scorer". "

He has never been an efficient scorer because he shoots very poorly, a career FG% of only 40%. Michael and Manu are around 45%.

    http://www.nba.com/playerfile/nick_van_exel/index.html

For the Spurs, which is all we care about, he's shooting a miserable, useless 33%, while the Spurs team is shooting 47%, and the worst team in the league shoots 43%.

He helps handling the ball, and can distribute a little bit, but what he loves most is shooting. Too bad he's shooting like , and takes a lot of early, bad shots. Maybe he'll hit a big 3G or two in the playoffs, but chances are, he won't.

come on, Nick was huge for Mavs in the 03 playoffs, but he's 3 years further down the downside of his nearly-over career, his elbow is ed, and he's a lot fatter.

Beno, in his 2nd year in NBA, is still settling down, hustling more than his "Disneyland/Livin in the USA" first year, hitting his shots, and still on the upside of his NBA career. He ain't Stockton, but neither was Stockton in Stockton's second year.

It's amazing that some of you think Beno is the next mark price or john stockton, what does beno have in common with them besides being white? Beno is a pure shooter and that's it, he wouldn't start on any team in this league including the bobcats. Why do you think he's plainted on the bench? Why do you think the spurs tried to trade him this offseason? Because i'm pretty sure Pop doesn't think beno is the next anything or he wouldn't have even thought about trading him for J. Jack or whoever he tried to get for him. I'm also pretty sure none of the GMs or coaches in the league think beno is the next stockton either cause any team could have had him for cheap. Don't get me wrong i like beno and would like to see him get more minutes but you guys are putting him up on a pedestal when all he is is a solid bench player.
