Satire

Sorry, but nothing annoys me more than partisan satire. Similar to Alice Cooper's thoughts on rock and roll, I don't like it when satire is used to campaign for (or against) a particular party or candidate. I like for satire to be a mockery of politics in general.

It's one of the reasons I don't watch Dennis Miller's CNBC show. Unfortunately, The Daily Show and The Onion are showing signs of "agenda" lately.

Tonight's Daily Show was a virtual orgasm of Kerry Victory celebration... I mean, obviously Bush is a comedic goldmine every time he speaks in public, but Kerry certainly leaves himself open to funny material, and I don't think it's been tapped enough. What's more, Jon Stewart had a pretty good interview with Rudy Giuliani about Bush's performance, where he asked pointed questions and cut through the partisan optimism. It would have been nice to see the same kind of interview earlier in the show when he spoke to Wesley Clark, but they were too busy circle jerking each other over how great Kerry was.

Then there's The Onion... normally the best website on the Internet for satire, this week's edition features a lead story that reads like something written for Democrats.org. The headline is funny, but I can't imagine anyone besides rabid Bush haters finding the story the least bit amusing.

Anyway, that's my rant. I don't like mean-spirited satire, conformist music, or partisan satire. I read and watch satire to laugh at politics, not Republicans or Democrats.
