I find it strangely quite in the forum about the debate that is going on
about illegal aliens in the United States.

Why are so many folks demonstrating about something that concerns every
man, woman and child in the United States?

Why should people demonstrate about people who are breaking the law?

Why should they be put at the head of the line before those who try to
    follow our laws?

Why do people insist that they only take jobs that Americans wont do? When everyone knows that they take skilled and semi-skilled jobs away
from American citizens? Good paying jobs.

Why, even if illegal, do they insist that everything official to be printed in their language and people speak their language when they claim they want
to live and be part of the United States?

Is it wrong to build a fence between our nation and Mexico?

I would like to see a good, honest debate about the issues.

Our immigration policy is absurd. As I've mentioned before, there are three interest groups in play:

    1) Immigration activists who want no restrictions on immigration whatsoever.

    2) Nativists who want no more Mexican immigration whatsoever because immigration means change.

There is no compromise possible between #1 and #2.

    3) Business interests who like the status quo because it means cheap labor and workers who have no rights.

The answer, of course, would be to allow enough workers in to meet demand, and give them papers and rights so that they can't be exploited, thus raising the wage scale. But there's nobody lobbying to do that, so it won't happen.

Mexican immigrants do perform a lot of jobs that Americans won't do. The illegals are performing more of the menial, low-wage tasks. But I also can tell you that in my industry, there is more of a preference for Mexican laborers to do semi-skilled and skilled tasks as opposed to white laborers. And it has nothing to do with pay. It has to do with at ude, work ethic, productivity, and quality of workmanship. If you want something done right and done fast, you'd better bring in a crew of Mexicans. And I don't mean Hispanics from San Antonio -- they're just as bad as the rednecks. Nor do I mean people from the border towns. I mean people from the interior of Mexico, starting in Monterrey and heading south to DF.

While the immigrants themselves have a lot of trouble learning English, they make damn sure their kids are speaking it. The at ude is totally different from what you're used to. I've had Mexicans get offended when I ask about the home country or try speaking Spanish with them, because they want to be regarded as Texans and Americans, and they take my speaking Spanish as an affront assuming their English isn't that good, when they've been working their asses off to learn it so they can fit in. If they're asking for stuff to be printed in Spanish, it's so Grandma can read it.

Now, you're not a young fella, but maybe you're not so old that you remember the days before World War II when there were neighborhoods in this country, even in San Antonio, where everything was printed in German.

So maybe my at ude is a little different because my experiences are different. I see rural white people today as stupid and arrogant, with this huge sense of en lement without any work ethic, wanting to bar out immigrants because the immigrants are outcompeting them. Keeping out the superior workers so that a bunch of lazy rednecks can screw around all day doesn't keep America strong. It turns us into Russia.

The Mexican immigrants also tend to be more socially conservative and authentic in sticking with their religious morality than the whites. They value family more. They raise their kids to have respect for authority more often. They're becoming what white people were 50 years ago, and if they're going to be like that, frankly not only would I like more of them to come, I would like to send busses full of these shiftless white people south on I-35 leaving twice a day out of the country as an exchange.

Of course I grew up in San Antonio, so I understand the situation is totally different there, with a lot of Hispanics using the now-outdated stereotype of Mexicans as lazy and shiftless as an excuse not to aspire to anything in their lives. So if you're in the middle of that, I can understand your frustration. But it's not like that everywhere. And the strain of immigration is nothing new to America.

I would love a sane immigration policy. But I don't see it happening anytime soon. I see this absurd status quo of not enforcing the law, and then periodically offering "amnesty," because that's what big business wants, and because those concerned about American workers seem too wrapped up in xenophobia to understand that what's good for immigrant workers can be good for them too.

    Basically... you.
Well... not all rural white people. I should have clarified that my perspective is meant to be local, refrerring to the counties north and east of Houston, extending into central and north Louisiana. If that's not you, then never mind. If that's you, then sorry, even if you're a productive tax-paying worker, far too many of your neighbors are worthless knuckle-dragging pieces of . Either they're content to collect their welfare checks and blame all their problems on black people for reasons that escape me, or they think they can do a piss-poor job and still keep it because of the color of their skin. them. them all and their whole way of life. And to all of these lazy inbred crackers waiting for your handout, you, you filthy swine. You can roll around outside in the muck and eat the Mexicans' garbage.

But even beyond that. American culture is in steep, steep decline, and getting outcompeted by neighbors to the south who formerly made up a backwards Third World economy should be a shocking and embarassing signal of how dire things are getting for us in a compe ive global economy. We don't get to be #1 just because the Stars and Stripes are flying overhead, and I don't think we get it.

Speaking as a long time resident of Texas, both West and South (locales bereft of large black populations) I am witnessing an odd convergence of cultures here in downtown Mississippi, in light of the burgeoning Mexican population.

I predict that Mississippi will once again be at the epicenter of newfound racial/ethnic tensions within the next five years - a literal three-ring circus.

Someone's go to raise our kids/elderly on the cheap. Someone has to help rich people by working for less than the minimum wage. Someone needs to wash our dishes, clean our toilets, and keep our five star hotels, five star. Basically someone has to do the jobs AMERICANS (not just rural white) don't want to do.
