Spurs notebook: Kick injures Parker's right foot

Web Posted: 03/27/2006 12:18 AM CST
    Johnny Ludden
    Express-News Staff Writer

SEATTLE — With Tony Parker limping out of the locker room Sunday night, the Spurs left KeyArena with more concerns than another loss.

Parker was kicked in the right foot by Seattle center Robert Swift in the second half. Though he continued to play, he was in noticeable pain after the game.

    "It's not good," Parker said.

Parker received treatment on the foot after the game and will be re-evaluated today.

The Spurs' point guard was already playing with a bruised right shoulder he suffered during Wednesday's loss in Denver. Parker and Bruce Bowen are the team's only players who have appeared in every game this season.

If Parker can't play Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers, Beno Udrih will likely start in his place. With Nick Van Exel still sidelined by a sore left elbow, Brent Barry may have to assume some point-guard duties.

Sanders signed: The Spurs officially signed rookie guard Melvin Sanders for the rest of the season on Sunday.

Sanders was previously cut three times by the Spurs this season. Coach Gregg Popovich told Sanders on Friday morning that he intended to re-sign him after his 10-day contract expired Saturday.

"We voted on the team," Popovich joked, "and it was 7-6 to keep him."

Sanders' signing gives the Spurs 14 players. They have one remaining roster spot, but don't plan on filling it.

"The only way we'll add another body is if somebody gets hurt," Popovich said.

French foreign legion: Parker didn't have Florida advancing to the Final Four in his NCAA bracket — even though the Gators are led by a 6-foot-11 center who figures to some day join Parker on France's national team.

Joakim Noah, who totaled 21 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in helping Florida beat Villanova on Sunday in the Minneapolis regional, is the son of former tennis pro Yannick Noah of France.

"I don't know him at all," Parker said. "But I'm going to now."

While Joakim Noah, a sop re at Florida, isn't expected to play for France at this summer's World Championships, Parker thinks he'll probably be on the team if it qualifies for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

France has compiled an impressive collection of young talent. In addition to Parker, the national team could feature Phoenix forward Boris Diaw, Golden State guard Mickael Pietrus, Seattle center Johan Petro and Los Angeles Lakers forward Ronny Turiaff. Also available are guard Mickael Gelebale, a 2005 second-round draft pick of Seattle, and forward Ian Mahinmi, the Spurs' first-round selection last summer.

"We've got a lot of young guys and I'm still young, too," said Parker, 23. "It's not like I'm 30.

"We're going to try to do something good this summer (at the World Championships), but I think we'll be even better at the Olympics."

That sucks. Tony rarely complains or even makes note of his injuries. Hopefully he can shake it off.

Hopefully it's just a bruise. It looked like he was rubbing his lower calf.

I'm happy for Beno. I hope that he shows how good player is, and that he should play more.

It doesn't sound that serious but Parker is the MVP of the Spurs so far this year.

I don't see the link with this injury.
When somebody kick in your foot, it hurts even if you aren't tired.

Yeap fred33, more news on the TP show. It's between 2:00pm and 3:00pm CST.

"We're going to try to do something good this summer (at the World Championships), but I think we'll be even better at the Olympics."
Yes, France can a top team in 2008.
Diaw, Petro, Noah, Mahinmi and Turiaf can become a great frontcourt.
If Parker, Pietrus and Gelabale can hit FIBA 3's with consistancy France will be very good at the Olympics (we need to be qualified first).

Soem news about french players :
    - Gelabale will likely play with Seattle next season (not the better news for Noel Felix)
    - Joseph Gomis ( a 27 years old PG who plays in Spain) will maybe play with the Spurs summer league team (Parker will try to loby for that). He hasn't a great upside but he can be a solid 3rd string PG and why not with Spurs behind Parker and Beno.

On the bright side, I'd rather the injury happens now than when the playoffs start.
