    San Antonio Spurs: A

    Stockton, Sean Elliott

Having both Stockton and Elliott call Spurs games is an embarrassment of riches for a local telecast, and though Stockton muffs a name here or there (notably calling Shawn Marion "Sean Elliott" several times in a game last month), he can be excused for the fact that he has called around 18 trillion sporting events in his professional career. Elliott provides solid, steady insight. Seemingly, he's either played with or against half the guys on the court, and he manages to balance a solid sense of humor with keen observations, all without being too showy.

Then again, the same guy gives Bill "Flavor of the Month" Walton an A+, saying:

Bill's a lightning rod, to be sure, but he also may be the most subversive talent the tube has to offer. Where others see a fawning sellout, I see an ardent fan who can't believe he's allowed to wax and preen on The Man's dime. Where others see a blustery hyperbole machine, I recognize a guy who loves to toy with the absurdities behind throwing huge gobs of money and focused klieg lights at men in short pants. I think Walton is one of the funniest guys on TV, I think he knows exactly what he's doing, and I know the proceeding paragraph will probably result in a brick being thrown through my living room window.

agreed with walton, he's gold. defintely the funniest analyst. i really liked when he was paired with snapper jones and snapper would attack him after every statement. stockton is getting old, but he's not as bad as the other in announcing. enberg really sucks, glad he doesn't do nba.

Seattle is way overrated, sure Calabro is great but Ehlo is a piece of crap. I think they were a little too nice overall. I think the worst grade they gave out was a C+, what kind of curve is that?

You know, I never really "got it" about Walton until late last year and early this season. He is funny once you realize he is being stereotypical on purpose.

B+ for Kerr is too low imo. Kerr and Albert are the best announcing crew in the business, both of them have great senses of humour and they play off each other so well.

He's got to be the worst analyst "IN THE HISTORY of BROADCASTING"

Where is Steve Jones when you need him?

The only people who I think have a problem with Walton are the ones who think he's being serious.

Walton covering hoops is everything that ABC was hoping Dennis Miller would be when they put him on Monday Night Football.

He was way too lenient on most of them.

And he gave Tommy Heinsohn an A.

Tommy "point" for you! (Just kidding)

This guy takes his job way too serious. He will lose his cool during games with opposing teams/players and it is comical when it takes place...

I agree with the paragraph about Bill. I really like the guy. He absolutely loves the game of Basketball, esp the NBA. When he and Snapper were together, that was some classic stuff!

You should have seen these guys in the 90's on Blazer broadcasts (Bill did a couple of them with Snapper), even more comedic than present day!

Walton was at his best doing color for the Clip-show. Corona was one of their sponsors, and everytime they had to do an ad for them in the fourth Walton would complain that he really needed a cold one after seeing how bad the Clippers looked that night.

BTW, Joel Myers is way better on the Laker broadcasts than he was on the Spurs. No more pard-ner every other sentence and a lot less homerism.

    LOL

    I miss those days.

Especially in 03 when the Spurs were playing the Clips and Olowakandi had a great like first half and he was going on and on about the Kandiman in the first half. Then the second half DRob and Duncan just ABUSE him, and of course he was ranting about how inept Olowakandi was

Sean Elliott is prob the best color guy the Spurs have ever had.

    Stockton just needs to retire.

Land is not great, but I like his enthusiasm!!

I disagree T Park. Stockton may get confused with names every now and then, but he is one of the best "voices" of sports. It is an honor and privilege for us to have him do our broadcasts. He doesn't do as many as Land does though. I also like Land and his patented "oh mamma" excitement. He works well with Sean as does Stockton.

    IMO only.

stockton is getting old, but he's not as bad as the other in announcing. enberg really sucks, glad he doesn't do nba.
He used to when they were on NBC, but I think he left in 1999 or 2000. I miss Stockton and his TNT broadcasts. To this day, my favorite team is Stockton and Hubie Brown. Kevin Harlen and Doug Collins are good, but I miss those two guys.

I'm glad Al Michaels is gone. That guy knows basketball like I know quantam physics. Talk about a guy who relied too much on other sports analogies. He'd say things like "Now a rebound only occurs when a team misses a shot. So I guess, if you were making a comparision in another sport, like football, Ben Wallace would be like that great punt returner who always puts his team in a position to win because they always have an advantage in possessions." You can almost hear someone saying this to him in a meeting before the broadcast. This is an exaggeration, but not much of one. I just love being talked down to.

Anyway, back to the topic, I don't understand this guy's list. The Pistons have a large media staff:

    Broadcasters:

Play-by-play: George Blaha (Pistons Television Network), Fred McLeod (Fox Sports Detroit), and Mark Champion (Pistons Radio Network).

Color Analyst: Bill Laimbeer (Pistons Television Network), Greg Kelser (Fox Sports Detroit), and Rick Mahorn (Pistons Radio Network).

Pre-Game and sideline reporters: Eli Zaret (Pistons Television Network), Ryan Field and Matt Shepard (Fox Sports Detroit), and Matt Derry (Pistons Radio Network).

As the Pistons enter the playoffs, Laimbeer is preparing for the Detroit Shock season as their GM and Head Coach. This causes him to miss a lot of games in the postseason, and the fill-in order is as follows:

    1. Rick Mahorn (sometimes unavailable because he's a Shock Assistant Coach)
    2. Greg Kelser
    3. John Long (mostly on the radio).

As the Pistons season is gearing up, Spartans Football is in full-swing. Saturdays in November George Blaha calls the games for Spartans Radio. It's just a long trip if the Pistons are at home and have an evening game on the same day the Spartans play during the day. But sometimes, like when MSU plays Notre Dame, they are moved into later in the day, and there's just not enough time. If the Pistons are on the road, he just doesn't call the game.

    His replacements are:

    1. Mark Champion
    2. Fred McLeod.

I bring this up because only Blaha, Laimbeer are evaluated, and for SOME REASON, GREG KELSER IS MENTIONED. He hasn't been the primary backup for PTN since 2002-03, when it meant more than a commitment to 2 extra games a year (Laimbeer was named Shock coach mid-way through the 2002 season).

    Great voice no question.

    But his time has passed.

Its like signing Moses Malone in 95.

While it looks good on paper, its just got you sitting there saying, its pointless.

yeah i agree, i like stockton and elliott, great team. its too bad Sean isnt doing ESPN games, i loved it when he worked nationally televised games and hearing what he had to say about anybody other than the spurs. he really does his homework.

on a side note, i like Joe Buck calling NFL and MLB games on FOX, and Gary Thorne kicks ass when he used to call the hockey games on ABC and ESPN. I hate OLN.
