SAN ANTONIO The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have signed free agents Ruben Boumtje Boumtje and Marque Perry. Per team policy the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Boumtje Boumtje, a 7-0 center from Georgetown, enters his fifth season in the NBA, after splitting time last season with Portland and Cleveland. He saw limited action with Portland, appearing in nine games, averaging 0.4 points and 2.9 minutes per contest. Boumtje Boumtje spent his first three seasons with Portland, but was acquired by the Cavaliers on 1/21 in the trade that sent Jeff McInnis to Cleveland. He went on the injured list (1/26), and did not see action with the Cavaliers. Boumtje Boumtje, a native of Edda, Cameroon, is ranked fourth on Georgetowns all time blocks list behind Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, and Dikembe Mutombo.
Perry, a 6-1 guard, is the fifth rookie on the Spurs training camp roster. During the 2003-04 season he earned All-NBDL honors, averaging 15.4 points, 6.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 44 games with the Roanoke Dazzle. As a senior at St. Louis University, the Chicago native earned First Team All-Conference USA honors.
The Spurs training camp roster now stands at 18 players. The Spurs will open camp on Tuesday, October 5, and play their first preseason game at New York on October 16. Following is the Spurs training camp roster:

My guess is that Perry will be the 15th Spur this season. The bench doesn't thrill me. If Udrih pans out and Brown can continue to improve then it should be ok. I expect Barry, Ginobili, and Horry to see some minutes at the 3 this season.

I assume so. Media Day is at 5pm, so we'll know for sure then.
If Udrih is healthy, I would rather have Thomas and Bomtje then Perry and Marks. I would also hope they are still looking for another option at sf. I don't feel comfortable just having LJ as our only legitimate backup 3. Barry and Manu can't last the season doing it, and Horry is to slow for me there.
Well Marks isn't a question. He's not going to be cut; the Spurs plan on him even being in the rotation this season.

I don't know whose minutes he's taking, but all indications are that he's getting a shot at playing time. Small forward question has been addressed with Linton Johnson III I assume.
Devin Brown isn't bad at sf, as long as the guys he's gaurding doesn't post up too much
Well I knew they're planning (hoping) on Johnson, but he's still raw and unpredictable. I just think we have an a lot of bigs and sg and not enough in between.
Bruce Bowen isn't too bad as long as he's not guarding Labron James.
Are these stats correct? Heights seem pretty generous for Marks, Sato, Monteiro, and Thomas, and from the pictures it doesn't look like Rasho has put on that much weight.
I don't think those numbers are all accurate but they are from the official Spurs press release. So that's what we have.
Marks was listed as 6'10, 250 last season.
Rasho was listed as 7', 248.
Romain was listed 6'5 coming out of college, but I think he measured 6'2.5 at Pre-draft camp.
Monteiro is around 6'1 and his name is Valter not Vatler.
Thomas, I think, is 6'8.
At Chicago Sato was measured at 6'2" without shoes. He had a wingspan of 6'11" and vetical reach of 8' 6.5". He has relatively wide shoulders that accounts for some of the wingspan. His vertical reach is that typical of a guy who's 6'4" or so.
Udrih was 6' 3.25" but he' has a bit of the alligator arms with a wingspan of 6' 4.5" and a vertical of 8' 2" typical of a guy 6' to 6 1/2'.
Can Sato play the 3?

Why would you rather have Ruben over Marks? Ruben is a stiff. At least Marks has done something to impress Pop into saying that he would be a contributer this season, and at least Marks knows the system from being on the team last season.If Udrih is healthy, I would rather have Thomas and Bomtje then Perry and Marks.
I can't see why you would want a reject over Marks.
Why would you think that Massenburg would make the active roster over Marks? Especially after Pop has said that Marks will get some minutes. And why would you want Massenburg to make it over Marks? What do you like better about Massenburg? His reputation of being a locker room problem? His inability to get do anything of significance over the course of many NBA seasons?
At least Marks is younger, more athletic, knows the system, and isn't a locker room problem.
Remember what happened last season when Adelman decided to sit Massenburg on the bench.
What's up Brodels, it's been a while. I'll answer this in two parts; first off, I don't think either Massenburg or Marks warrants any sort of 'car waxing' whatsoever. Let's be realistic here from a minute-distribution standpoint. With Tim Duncan, Rasho Nesterovic, Robert Horry and Malik Rose in the frontcourt, just how significant will the contributions of either Massenburg and/or Marks be? I voted for Massenburg because he's tough, because he's a veteran that fits the Kevin Willis mold, that fills the Kevin Willis now vacant role. Let's be frank here, you cannot tell me that most domestic cats, let alone opposing bigmen are the least bit intimidated by either Tim Duncan or Rasho Nesterovic can you? The Spurs could use the toughness of Massenburg more than the outside shot of Marks and I'm confidant Pop will see things this way.
Sean Marks can always fill in some nights on color-commentary duty though........he made me laugh a couple times that night in Utah last year.
