I wouldn't mind P.J. Carlesimo either.
If Pop didn't want to coach anymore, would you mind Avery Johnson as the coach of the Spurs, or would you want someone else?
thanks
I wouldn't mind P.J. Carlesimo either.
Yes, I would. I mean, who am I to decide?
But it wouldn't be a good idea for the franchize. He can coach Spurs when they are without TD. It never a good experiance for a former team-mate to assume authority over the star-player.
Avery is not old enough for Spurs players. He would probably make an ol'Boys club and divide a team doing so. TP, Udrih, the next long 3 and other people need a father figure in their manager and coach.
I think many Spur fans would take AJ over Bob Hill
NO I would not let him coach the spurs yet
I want to see what he can do in the postseason
Avery is overrated. He put Jerry Stackhouse in the starting lineup. That is like the ultimate sin.
Want? Nope. Big ego that he throws around. He'll end up losing his players.
Avery gets too worked up too much over regular season losses. If he had to take the inconsistancies of this team every night, then he'd have a coronary.
I am hoping that AJ is "auditioning" with the Mavs so he can be successor to Pop in 5 - 6 years...
Avery is not the best coach for these reasons.
1. He is inexperienced
2. His personnel choices are questionable. (Starting Stackhouse and allowing him to take poor shots and turn it over while giving Daniels a hard time for any mistakes he does.)
3. Disrespecting Dirk by saying the Mavs have no internal leader. Of course you could blame the personnel over the coaching as they are not Avery type players.
avery may not like daniels
he does not like yound point guards
he told the press that the spurs were using a boy to do a man's work (meaning tp)
Avery only likes Stackhouse because he has a snarl. That's ing stupid imo because Stackhouse sucks in every part of his game but since he acts tough he gains Avery's favor.
I'm not sure when, but I sense a revolt against Avery. Maybe not even next year, but his mouth is going to cause problems. I wish him the best, and he has taken over the Mavs and kept them going without skipping a beat. However, he seems to always be taking shots at and degrading the "team", but at the end of the tirade he says "Ultimately, it's my fault", as if it makes up for everything he said before. Well, that is only going to work as a motivational tool for so long.
How would you feel if your parents told you that you were a miserable lowlife everday? Even if they say they failed you and admit that it is their fault, you still know how they really feel about you.
So no, I would not want him as our head coach, but I do believe he would make one of an assistant, especially for a Spurs team that lacks meaning at times.
I don't think Avery Johnson would work well with teams that don't win, he can hardly handle a very good team like the mavs when they lose. And that little is very annoying.
I'd be just like Flip taking over Larry....
As opposed to Pop?
Pop lost his players? When?
When was the last time Pop called his players out in the media? Last time he whined to the press about being tired of taking the blame for losses?
You people do realize Avery is in his second year as a head coach right? Technically not even his second. He's still in the process of learning, just like Pop was when he was handed the reigns to the Spurs. Whenever Pop does decide to quit coaching I'd be glad to take Avery back.
I would want to watch how Avery does over the next few years. See how he matures as a coach. He is still very new at this and it's hard to make a call at this point.
How long do we think Pop is going to be around though?
I think Avery is too emotional and flips out with the media too much. He takes things way too personal with the media, when they just ask him questions about what went wrong. He's insane with the refs too. He's gonna have to calm down because he's gonna have a heart attack.
But I guess a part of the problem is the players too. Maybe it's me, but nobody on the Mavs seems like a particularly intelligent player IMO. The Spurs have Tim, Manu, and Roho, who all have genius-level basketball IQs, and Bones is pretty heady too.
I don't know if anybody on the Mavs "sees" the game like those guys, so Avery or the assistant coaches have to hold their hands every step of the way...
That's probably what he means by internal leadership.
Until Tim retires.
About the same time Avery lost his, it seems.
You got to be kidding me on the first question. When was the last time Pop called his players out in the media? Last time he whined to the press about being tired of taking the blame for losses?
hahahahaha, yeah, maybe it's YOU, thanks for the s and giggles
I couldn't think of anyone better to take over for Pop than Avery Johnson.
He coached the Spurs to their 99 win, so i'd say hes alright.
no, you guys can't have him back, you already have nick, finley and some of your posters are recommending nash and now avery?!?!?!?!
