CASSELL WANTS TO STAY

Cassell already has proved his worth to the Clippers this season, bringing leadership, production, clutch play and a swagger the team has not had in years. Cassell’s contract expires this summer, but he has said he wants to sign a new deal with the Clippers, for at least a two-year guarantee. So far the Clippers have not made any overtures to Cassell’s agent, Charles Tucker, about an extension.

Cassell, whom the Clippers acquired in the summer in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves, is earning $6.2.million in the final year of his contract.

“I want to be honorable, and I want them to be honorable,” Tucker said Monday at the Clippers’ morning shootaround. “I don’t want to talk about contracts right now, because Sam is here to try to win a championship and he has to be honorable, too.”

Although Cassell has maintained that he wants to be focused on the task at hand, which he said is to lead the Clippers as deep into the playoffs as possible, the veteran, 36, also said he wants a clear understanding from the organization about what their plans are.

“I don’t feel that I should have to go to them,” Tucker said. “When the time is right ... after this is all over, I’d hope that they’d come to us and then we’ll talk.”
