Derek Anderson: the guy who threatened to sit if we didn't split the 12 mil we had in the offseason??! He REEEEEEAAAALLLY believed he was as valuable as David Robinson to the team!?!? LOL Good...bad karma. He's gonna spend the summer pickin splinters out of his ass from ridin the pine with the Heat! hahaha
Here how prosperous his career has become, averaging 3.5 ppg and 9.5 mpg. I LOVE IT!

Derek's very injury-prone, we all saw that when Dirk took him out in the playoffs. He never amounted to much in Portland, thought it was a better fit for him than the Spurs but it just didn't work out for many reasons.
Man, Funk DA, we can plug anyone in around the big three and we'll roll to the le. Bring in Bill Wennington, doesn't he want another ring?

The only thing Juwan Howard ended was a Spurs playoff run. DA ended his own career by forcing the trade to Portland instead of waiting until after Timmy's wedding to negotiate his contract.
To think that there were many, many, many people around a forum like this one in the summer of 2001 who thought that the Spurs had made a horrendous mistake by not giving in and offering DA a guaranteed 7th year.
I suspect that there are even some who smirk now about DA's downfall who were ripping Spurs management for not giving in to Derek's broadcast demands from his palacial estate.
While it's clear in retrospect that Pop made the right move (or the lucky one) by casting him off to Portland, I think it's BS now to snicker about the way DA's career has gone. He wanted more $, SA didn't give it to him. He went elsewhere and got what he wanted. Happens in business all the time. No hard feelings on either side.
I honestly wish it had gone better for DA. He was spectacular to watch that one year he was here. I, and many other NBA fans, thought his best days were ahead of him.
I really hope no Spurs fan in 2006 finds any joy in DA's dropoff since 2001, especially since injuries played such a key part in it. The guy had talent, and it's a shame we'll never again see him like he used to be.

^^^Well, you're apparently a fan. I'm not. I smirk/laugh/point at the selfish "me first" player in a team sport who put's himself before the team. He did. He went public. Spurs historically don't do that. With the Spurs organization, YOU WILL REAP THE REWARDS WHEN YOU EARN THEM! History has shown what a stand up organization this era's FO has been when you prove your worth. Derek had put in ONE year of work when he started making demands. Not gonna work. We have NO SHAME in making mistakes when we overpay a star who decides to take a break AFTER putting in their work for the team (see Jaren Jackson and Malik Rose, even the Charles Smith(s)). I don't feel sorry for Derek a bit. You develop a reputation no matter how good you are, and Derek wasn't even that good.
If I remember correctly the Spurs offered Anderson a contract with incentives - one of them an NBA le. He couldn't keep his mouth or his spokeperson Greg Matson shut.
Derek Anderson was injury prone prior to his season with the Spurs, it was during his only season with the Spurs did he play 82 games. He was knocked out of the playoffs when Juwan Howard committed the hard foul. After he got his contract did he become injury prone as he was before his contract year.
At the time, I thought losing Derek Anderson hurt us a lot. I was pretty devastated. Fortunately, it was around that very moment when the reports of Ginobili started hitting stateside. So it I still had hope that he would be our future at the 2 spot, though in truth, I thought he had the potential to replace DA, but definitely not to surpass him. I was sooooo wrong both on the long-term impact of losing Derek Anderson and Manu's potential.
In truth, I think a lot of fans had similar impressions. I recall thinking that Derek Anderson was something of a charlitan, though I wondered that summer how the Spurs were going to maintain any sort of flexibility if they gave DA a 7 year deal. Given his injury history, I also thought that any long-term deal was iffy. Still, Ginobili was an unproven quan y in NBA terms and while reports of his prowess were promising, I think it was pretty natural to wonder if he'd be able to play to his potential.
The whole scenario appears to have turned out wonderfully for the Spurs. It might be that Pop and the boys knowingly shorted DA on the contract offer in the hope that he'd not sign. That would be a scary good prognostication on their part.
Back then I was skeptical cause he was in a contract year but I was worried that his athleticism couldn't be replaced (Steve Smith, whom I liked didn't have it) But it's safe to say that Ginobili is a much better player then Anderson.
You could look back into the Spurs Popovich era and see alot of misses that turned out to be blessings in disguise.
Anderson should just admit publicly that he wants to enter the "I need to feed my family club"
He should admit it to Greg Matson while standing in front of his swimming pool at his luxury home.
I liked DA, and I thought he was the missing link to a le when he was acquired. That all went away with a few seconds before halftime against the Mavericks. His crybaby and crawfishing the Spurs to sign with the Blazers took some of the sting out of losing him, as did seeing Steve Smith win DA's ring from the bench. I'm glad to see that his career hasn't gone well, considering the huge sums of money he's been paid to sit behind the bench in a suit.
