Federal Source to ABC News: We Know Who You're Calling
May 15, 2006 9:33 AM
Brian Ross and Richard Esposito Report:
ABC NewsA senior federal law enforcement official tells us the government is tracking the phone numbers we call in an effort to root out confidential sources. "It's time for you to get some new cell phones, quick," the source told us in an in-person conversation.
We do not know how the government determined who we are calling, or whether our phone records were provided to the government as part of the recently-disclosed NSA collection of domestic phone calls. Other sources have told us that phone calls and contacts by reporters for ABC News, along with the New York Times and the Washington Post, are being examined as part of a widespread CIA leak investigation.
One former official was asked to sign a do ent stating he was not a confidential source for New York Times reporter James Risen. Our reports on the CIA's secret prisons in Romania and Poland were known to have upset CIA officials. People questioned by the FBI about leaks of intelligence information say the CIA was also disturbed by ABC News reports that revealed the use of CIA predator missiles inside Pakistan.
Under Bush Administration guidelines, it is not considered illegal for the government to keep track of numbers dialed by phone customers. The official who warned ABC News said there was no indication our phones were being tapped so the content of the conversation could be recorded. A pattern of phone calls from a reporter, however, could provide valuable clues for leak investigators.
ABC News has been one of the most reliable supporters of Dubya and the Neo-Cons, especially when it comes to pre-war intelligence. So, ABC shouldn't worry if they don't have anything to hide... right?
Yes we are Monitoring Al Queda... and CNN, CBS etc are all part of Al Queda.
The War on Terror is too important to allow freedom of the press anymore. Any independent investigation into what our government is doing plays into the hands of our enemies. We would be better off with a state-controlled, or at least state-affiliated media that could just relay to us what our government feels is important that we know.
We don't need to worry about accountability of the current Administration. Bush is a very trustworthy person because he is a Republican.
There are many conveniences and luxuries about political life in the United States which are obsolete in light of the WOT. Certain forms of speech inhibit the ability of the government to do its job. Criticism of the President has eroded his ability to do what he needs to do to keep us safe. Other speech is seditious, or gives aid and comfort to the enemy.
Likewise, freedom of assembly allows subversives to disrupt the everyday life of peaceful citizens, and may prevent Homeland Security from responding to threats. It also allows enemies of the state to come into close contact.
We've already covered freedom of the press.
It has been proven that certain religions, or the absence of practice altogether, can be correlated with terrorist activity, or with activity in opposition to the President who toils to keep us safe. It would be in our best interest to suppress such practices in order to snuff out terrorists and terrorist sympathizers.
By allowing persons in this country to carry firearms with only do entary regulation, we might unwittingly allow a terrorist sympathizer to conduct unspeakable acts. Only those aligned with the President, whom we can trust to act to defend this country, should be permitted to carry firearms.
As gra ude for the hard work our troops are doing to keep us safe from terrorists on the homefront, citizens should allow the government to save some money by quartering troops in their homes when the military finds it necessary.
By allowing terrorists and their sympathizers to avoid testifying against themselves, we lose valuable information which could save lives. It should not come down to a murderer being granted immunity in order to uncover sensitive information about a terrorist plot.
I could go on, but I think everyone understands.
I'm sure Yoni would like to see a link.
Nah, not interested.
Unfortunately, there is a "link" between some of our press
who use their "freedoms" to promote the party that would
take all our freedoms away from us. If someone, in the press
or not in the press, who publishes government programs that is
designed to protect our safety and freedom then I'm sorry
they need to be revealed and prosecuted. They are
traitors to our society and MY safety and security. Their
revelations are not to protect the society but to promote their
agenda and damage programs of a opposition party, who
they consider more of an enemy than those that would
destroy the country as a whole.
Besides people of that same party ins uted more
intrusive policies that invaded our privacy and now
wish to blame the opposite party. Please get real in
you accusations.
I meant a URL. thanks though.
I knew what you were wanting, but there is a link between
the leaker and press that does concern national security. And
I could't resist stating my view on it.
Even for you, this post is....
