mavs were down 3-1 last year - i thought it went 2-2 each team winning on the other's court.

The Pistons didn't make the playoffs in 2001. This happened two years later.
They did play a seven-game series, but the series was tied 2-2 when game 5 started.
That's right - they came back from 2-0.
