First off Bush has certainly been fiscally irresponsible in his first term. That expansion of Medicare was quite horrid.Fiscal responsibility
Mr. Bush will claim that Mr. Kerry proposes $2 trillion in new spending. That's a partisan number and is much higher than independent estimates. Meanwhile, as The Washington Post pointed out after the Republican convention, the administration's own numbers show that the cost of the agenda Mr. Bush laid out "is likely to be well in excess of $3 trillion" and "far eclipses that of the Kerry plan."
Of Bush's $3 trillion in proposed future spending, $2 trillion is related to his plan to restructure Social Security. Given that the present value of the projected unfunded liability of the en lement programs at this point is on the order of $75 trillion (the total value of federal govt debt securities outstanding, the "national debt" is only $7 trillion). Bush's agenda doesn't seem that irresponsible. I suppose it's all a matter of perspective.
