haven't heard from chump in a while.
Call it a mobile big, call it a fast PF or C. I'll just call the need what it is...a long SF, or at least the type of player with the skill set we have traditionally considered to be a SF, who is long.
The SF has traditionally been considered to be the NBA position requiring the most athleticism and versatility.
The required skill set for the tradional NBA SF:
Passing, shooting, rebounding, the ability to score inside and out, defend on the perimeter, as well as in the post. If that sounds like a guy that can do anything...well that is traditionally what has been asked the of the NBA Small Forward.
I'd like to devote this thread to discussion of filling this need...Why is this our greatest need? Becuase Dirk Nowitzki is a SF in a seven footers body and Dallas aint getting any worse in the offseason. .
So who is out there? Who can we get via FA, trade or draft from another team in the NBA, from a European team...from anywhere, that will help us compete for a le next year, that will prevent our defense from being completely exploited by the teams with the personnel to do so, like the Phoenix Suns, the Houston Rockets, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Los Angeles Lakers...and of course, the Dallas Mavericks.
Discuss...
In particular I am looking for the opinions of the traditional heavy hitting offseason guys...
Chumpdumper, Marcus Bryant, TimVP...this is your domain. Lead us to the promised land.
I am going to be updating this first post with a list of SF's, suggested by forum members, that the Spurs may be able to aquire through FA, or trade, as the offseason progresses.

haven't heard from chump in a while.
As I remember we needed a shooter the most.
Finley and Barry? o!
We thought we had a center in Nazr. We don't (even after the excitment performance vs the suns).
In my opinion the spurs need Michael Jordan or Larry Bird. Well also I could consider Magic Johnson. Bill Russell would be too much cause we don't want to win championships every year...
I wish we could get KGarnet somehow
edit: As far as Nazr... trade him for YAO... Htown does not need him
OMG Timmy and Yao would people up. (pure fantasy)
Pop: "We need a Derrick McKey type".
Exactly.

He doesn't.
This is a pretty good "outsider" analysis

The Good: Another year, another #1 seed in the playoffs. Yawn. At this point, it's a given that the Spurs will be one of the top teams in the league every year. Their top three players are in the prime of their careers and are locked-up for at least the next four seasons. Tim Duncan was his usual, dependable self. Even though injuries contributed to his career low 18.6 scoring average, he still managed 11 boards and 2 blocks per game. Duncan will make nearly $20 million a year for four more years. Manu Ginobili also has four years left at about $9.5 million per season. He missed 17 games due to injury, but he still managed dependable numbers (though a slight improvement wouldn't hurt). The team's MVP, Tony Parker, had a career year by scoring 18.9 point per game to go along with 5.8 assists and shot an incredible 54.8% from the field. The Spurs have Tony for five more seasons at a total of $57.6 million. With those three players as their core, San Antonio is set for along time.
Another player who should be considered part of that core is defensive stopper and three-point specialist Bruce Bowen. For what he brings to this team, Bowen is severely underpaid. He is set to make only $3.75 million next season and the team has an option for the following season for $4.125 million. Other teams would be wise to pry Bowen away from the Spurs in two years. Until then, San Antonio will enjoy his excellent value.
The Bad: Rasho Nesterovic's contract is still a burden for the Spurs. His numbers are down even from last's year' dismal season. Rasho still has three more years and $23 million left to go. The team is looking forward to the day it can trade his expiring contract for something more useful.
The Nick Van Exel experiment did not work out well. The veteran point guard shot under 40% from the field and hardly contributed. Luckily, he only had a one-year contract.
The Future: Despite having such a talented and dependable group of players, the Spurs cannot simply sit back and relax. The rest of the league is gunning for them and will tweak their teams just to beat them.
Nazr Mohammed is a free agent this summer and while he was the team's second leading rebounder, he wasn't exactly an important piece of the puzzle. Mohammed averaged just 5.2 rebounds in 17.4 minutes. San Antonio really needs to find some help for Tim Duncan on the front line. They could also use an upgrade to their bench, which now appears to be weak. Rasho, Brent Barry, Van Exel, and even Robert Horry didn't contribute much this season.
If the Spurs do not advance to the finals this year, look for them to make some changes this off-season through trades, the draft, or their mid-level exception. Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili will need some help if they are to sustain their current success. Lucky for them, it is easy to convince players to take a pay cut for a legitimate chance at an NBA le.
Bonus Points… for grabbing Michael Finley at a cheap price. The veteran guard still has some life left in his legs, as evidenced by his repeated posterizing of Eric Dampier in the playoffs. Finley was able to provide a scoring spark outside of the Spur's big three.
Grade: A-
They should target DeMarr Johnson
Here are some FA names, that come into my mind:
Boris Diaw, 6'10 (might be too expensive)
Tim Thomas, 6'10
Smith, 6'6 might be a little too short to play SF
Jones, Jumaine
Ebi
Lets see what Pop will be able to do...
It's not like the Spurs didn't try last summer.
even if he wasnt expensive you wouldnt have a chance to get him.
Diaw is under contract for next year. Phoenix stole that guy. He will only make 1.6 million next year.
From the Pop Show, I think the teams priorities are as we expected:
Get Backup PG
Get Long SF (or athletic PF or whatever you want to call it)
Then figure out what to do with the bigs.
That means we have got one problem less than in last few years.
Somehow I think it is impossible for the spurs to imrove.
With Finley addcion what you needed more?
Now we know we are not athletic enough. Well the NBA is changeing dammit Spurs are not getting younger. damn I'm pessimistic.
Sure would be nice to have Adreas Noccioni up in this ...
He'd have slapped Dirk off the court physically.
Can we afford Caron Butler? Or pry Tayshaun from the Pistons?
Eric Williams is pretty long ... long in the tooth too. Jumaine Jones and Deshawn Stevenson are possibilities. Do we want Ruben Patterson?
Sign and trade for Luol Deng, meng!
Oh, I thought he would be a FA this year. Sorry, my bad. But it will be interesting to see where he ends up then.
I can't see Thomas leaving Phoenix this summer. He has found a system he fits perfectly in and has already made a ton of money in this league...I don't see him leaving Phoenix for the same amount of money (vet minimum) and thats all the Spurs could probably pay him...he already made that choice last summer.
Tim Thomas, much like Bonzi, has a major post-contract dog alert attached to him.
Tim Thomas can't guard Dirk Nowitzki...
Tim Thomas is Robert Horry without the smarts....or shotblocking, defense, rings.
TimVP...what the ?
I give you that huge introduction in the initial thread and the perfect outlet for your thoughts on the solutions to this problem and in return I get:
and
Weak...uninpsired. Does Dallas now own you this badly?
Javtokas is athetlic isn't he? At 6'10", he isn't too big to be slow. JR Smith would be a great addition no matter what because like timvp said, he has Kobe-like talent. Pryzbilla would be great in the middle with Tim, and Claxton would be a great addition as the backup PG. Scola over Pryzbilla would be great too.
