I read in another post that SA is the smallest market in the NBA. Now, I've heard that for years, but is that really true? I figured Salt Lake City would have that honor, from what I remember in the Olympics a few years back.

Salt Lake City is tiny. I was so surprised when we went there for RMR. Salt Lake City metro is only about 180K people. The Salt Lake City "area" is about 900K.

The odd thing is that 180k is about 22 families.

What exactly is used to determine market size? Totla population? This is just television households.

Yeah, I didn't fully agree with whotts conclusion that we had the absolute smallest market....

Maybe among the perennial playoff contenders that would be the case.

"Market size" almost always means metropolitan area, not just the city proper. For example, DC proper is smaller than SA, but the DC-VA-MD metro area is around #5-10 in size.

I am surprised that New Orleans is smaller than SA.

I don't know why the NBA allowed the team to move to New Orleans ... a town that is actually getting SMALLER in size. Word is the NBA might make them move again if the attendance doesn't improve this season.

I think by TV market size they mean, TV's that have rabbit ears on top don't count! More seriously though, I think it's more about spending power of the market in question. Like difference in income and or purchasing power.

Market size is determined by the number of households with a television in a metro area.

San Antonio is the 8th largest city in the country but the 37th market. Metro SA is relatively small. Dallas is the 9th largest city but has Fort Worth (5th largest city in TX) as part of the metro area and thus, market #7. Until SA Austin is considered a metro area, which probably won't happen for another 20 years, SA won't crack the top 15.
