If Tim Duncan made 89.7% of his free throws, how many points would he average?

    Do the math.

He would score 1.4 pts/ game more if he shot 88% of his FTs instead of his current 68% career percentage.

That is really not that much, considering it is less than 10% of his current 22pts/game career average.

If all the Spurs shot their FT's better, imagine how many more games we could have won over the years.

In 02/03, when Spurs' excessive TOs and bad FTs were problems, Pop said the 60W season would have been 63 - 65W on FTs alone.

If he shot close to 90% he would take/make a lot more free throws than currently. He would most likely take all the technicals and be the designated go to guy to get the ball into during late game situations when the other team has to foul. I would say from between 25-27 points.

I seriously think free throw practice should be the number one priority off the offseason. I'm serious. If we could shoot 'em like Phoenix or Dallas we'd be nearly unstoppable.

I think we were nearly unstoppable this season/playoffs. Nearly.

Bottom line: free throws cost us the series against Dallas. We make our Free Throws, we win that series easily.

It was not just free throws, be real.

Did I ing say that? No.

BUT, it is true, if we made more free throws, we would have won the series. That is true. You just need to look at Game 7 for proof of that...

That said, if Bowen made one more three, if Manu didn't foul, if Tim made the last shot...

    If, If, If.

I think he'd average more than 1.4 more pts per game. He'd definitely try to draw more fouls than he does now and that dude is a genius at drawing fouls IMO. He made Diop look silly several times with his subtle moves around the rim.

Whoever said that? He's better than anyone the Mavs have had at that position in a long time but that's not really saying much.

Geez...can't even give one of your boys some props w/o getting some or sarcasm. I give up.

Diop is not the reason Duncan was dominating. It was all those damn 3 point threats that make Duncan unstoppable. Same thing with Diaw. The players around them make them better.

Actually, since Tim is one of only two players in NBA history to win les with a completely (11 different men on the roster) re-loaded roster (Bill Russell is the other) I think it is he who makes them better.

The players around Duncan all hit the 3 at a very high rate. Duncan can pretty much go 1 on 1 all day without help defense. Any player will look better if given that opportunity. Diaw is the perfect example of someone that looks better than they actually are because of no help defense. Duncan is a great player but his offense looked great this playoffs because Dallas couldn't help out on defense.

They hit a high rate because Tim gets them open looks with his post up game and passing, and the doubling that most teams do. His pass out of the post rarely leads directly to an assist, but it s up the opposition by forcing the rotation of the defense as the ball swings around the horn.

If your argument were true, we'd keep the same shooters, and plug in Joe Post player to rip you to shreds because of the fine shooting. That isn't what happens. Duncan is the constant, and the shooters change, almost yearly.

Agreed, but I think Mavsfan1000's point is that Duncan looked unusually good against Dallas because he mostly saw single coverage, rather than that Diop was one of the worst defenders Duncan saw all season. I think that's fair.

Exactly. Diop and Dampier are good defenders but no player in the league can guard Duncan without help defense. Add to the fact Duncan got healthy and you got a matchup nightmare. San Antonio though lost rebounding and defense over making Duncan unstoppable with small ball.
