How many times can Javtokas put a Slovene through the rim?

After watching four games it's clear that those were highly culled plays in the highlights video, not anywhere close to Javtokas offensive game. My impressions:

The Good: Javtokas is a very good defensive player. He plays on and off the ball well and is in always in good position. He's the anchor of the teams defense and covers well for players who've been beaten, still getting back to his man. Plays the screen and roll consistently well. Can block or contest shots well.

The So So: He is no Ben Wallace on the boards. At best he'll hold his own. He blocks out okay but doesn't read the ball exceptionaly well, kind of mechanical. He also looks to have somewhat short arms making hs standing reach less his 6'11" would suggest.

The Bad: Offensively he lends nearly nothing even in the ULEB level games. Those highlights seem like every good offense play he made in a season. He's probably his teams fifth option on offense. His offense consist primarily of setting high post screens and rolling to the basket for a potential rebound or setting up on the left block where he's generally ignored. When he does get the ball he usually kicks it out. When he tries to do something offensively on the blocks the success rate is fairly low. He lost the ball several times and his shots clanked several times.

Overall: Probably a nice player to have but with significant limitations.

How good are his hands? Does he fumble passes under the basket? Does he pump fake?

You never know...his offensive game might actually be helped by Duncan's presence...IF he's an agressive garbage man all the attention Duncan draw should make things easier for him.

He also looks to have somewhat short arms
    Interesting.

A lot of people have said that on the board.

But I had always read (years ago) that he had a very good wingspan/reach.

The rebounding thing bothers me...his rebounding numbers in Euroleagues are actually pretty good. I was really hoping he would be a great rebounder.

If you look at him holding that award over his head at the end of the youtube video posted a few days ago, you can see them clearly. They seem about average in length.

I am watching it right now...he doesn't have short arms, he's got unusually muscular arms, and he may not be Manute Bol, but his arms aren't "short". Can't be a good shotblocker with short arms.

He fumbled the ball a couple of times but he's no Malik or Nazr.

He had a hard time with entry passes. A couple were bad entries but four weren't. Players just reached around him and tapped the ball away or outright stole it. Again I think part of that could be relatively short arms reaching out to receive the entry.

whottt look at how far his arms reach down his thighs compared to others or his upper arm down his trunk. He may have a long trunk but I don't think so.

Here's a picture of him with his arm pretty straight...

Stupid website won't let me steal their bandwidth so...

    http://media.search.lt/GetFile.php?O...815&filetype=3

I mean he doesn't have arms like Duncan or Drob...but his arms aren't "short" they just aren't long. Plus he's muscled. If his arm length was that big of a liability it would be mentioned in a scouting report somewhere...and it's not. There's no mention of him having short arms anywhere that I could find.

And short arms and shotblocking don't go together...the two are incompatible. There's never been a shortarmed big who was a shotblocker..at least to my knowledge...there have been a few that were excellent rebounders, but shortarms pretty much kills the shotblocking aspect of someones' game.

i think his bulky arms give it the illusion that they are short

if all the dunks we saw by this guy were his only offense, then he's goign to suck hard

but if he can give us that passion and be tenacious for garbage baskets, he will be bad ass in our system, for a role player

We don't need the second coming of DRob on offense at the pivot spot, we just need someone to clean up the glass on the weakside when teams are focusing on stopping TD.

Best thing to do is watch the videos, then you won't have unrealistic expectations. I seem him as a good defender. If he can rebound decently he'll be a good addition. From what I see he'll be NO offensive force whatsoever.

Since when do we expect our centers to be offensive forces?

Tim Duncan turned one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history into an 8.5ppg role player.

Don't get me wrong, he can be a good contributor Being an offnsive force isn't necessary. On the otherhand would be nice to have a center that could hit a 16 set foot shot just to keep the defense a bit honest and from doubling Duncan with impunity. Bowen + Javtokas is reducing the Spurs to three significant offensive forces. He appears to me to be less of an offensive threat than Nazr or even Rasho.

How many centers really hit that with consistency anyway?

Only if we go small do we really need to worry about scoring from Duncan's frontcourt mate.

Not many but then Duncan doesn't really play like todays typical PF, Bosh, Garnett, Dirk, West, even Brand lately. He plays closer to a good offensive center, nearer the basket. So ideally his companion big should have a mid range shot that has to be honored somewhat to keep his man honest.

Krstic would be a good example of a nice companion big if Thorn hadn't screwed things up.

Usually that means the key jumper. I'm sure we'll try to get RJ to do that, otherwise we'll treat him like Nazr -- if he plays better D, that's acceptable.

    Anyone a member of Euro$tat$.com?

    http://www.usbasket.com/player.asp?C...&PlayerID=8111

    Blurb for his scouting report:

Long arms and good coordination. Good jumper, who can easily dunk in the traffic. ... May 1, 2002 when Javtokas was riding his motorcycle at around 140 ...

FWIW, his Wikipedia entry also described him as having long arms...I know...Wikipedia.

But like I said...I haven't seen him described as having short arms anywhere but here...one would think that a guy who can block shots and dunk on a 12 foot rim probably doesn't have short arms...and that is the sort of thing that would be mentioned in a scouting report somewhere...it isn't.
