SUMMER LEAGUE UPDATE: Bower is hopeful that the Hornets' Brandon Bass, Kirk Snyder, J.R. Smith, Marcus Fizer and Linton Johnson will play for the summer league team in July in Las Vegas.

"And if not for all of it, at least for portions," Bower said. "We won't force anybody, obviously, but we are encouraged with their willingness to prepare and improve. It's a great midsummer checkup."

The Hornets could trade Smith, who will enter his third season this fall, before July. Smith clashed with Scott during the season and lost his starting job.

This summer, Smith has participated in workouts in Houston with John Lucas, a former NBA player and coach. Smith is working out with other NBA players such as Steve Francis and Mike James. And according to Smith's father, Earl, the 6-foot-6 shooting guard now is at 225 pounds with 1 percent body fat.

The Hornets could wait until after the summer league to trade Smith -- if they trade him at all -- so he can showcase his abilities for opposing scouts.

Do you guys think the Hornets are still interested in Barry? Would be cool if the Spurs could land him...

JR Smith was already listed at 220, so it's funny that it says he's now 225 with 1% body fat.

If all of those guys play, they should have one of the better summer league teams.

1% body fat is questionable...probably 5-7% is more likely for a young kid, but gaining weight with pure muscle isn't, actually. Muscle weighs more than fat (although I'm sure this isn't new to anyone).

If he hit the weights full force this off-season its not impossible to have only 1% body fat. Gaining five punds in muscle is not easy to do.

Have you ever heard of "essential fat"...as in essential for a body to function?

Exactly. I just can't function without my daily McDonald's fix.

What does essential fat have to do with JR SMith supposedly gaining five pounds and having only 1% body fat?

Big Mo, I'm not a physician. I do know that the body has to have a certain percentage of essential fat in the system...like in the bones and organs...to function well and I'm pretty sure 1% is below the essential range.

It's probably best someone look it up to see the safe range...but there is a safe range.

I'll see if I can get a more definitive range, Big Mo.

There comes a point where losing fat is no longer beneficial, as it's essencial for life.

    See here.

Apparently 2% to 4% body fat is the essencial threshold, with athletes ranging between 6% to 13%.

There's no way he is at 1% body fat. The lowest I ever heard on an athlete was when Dikembe was a rookie he was around 3% body fat and the Nuggets thought that was dangerously low.

^ This kid has 16% body fat.

    I know Duncan's a little slimmer, but I doubt he's 14% body fat slimmer.

This is bull . If Tim or JR had body fat that low, they'd be absorbing it from people when they shake their hands.
